LOL? Hypocrite much?
On a serious note, I don't think AMD will overtake Intel anytime soon. The only chance is if Intel majorly f***s up Haswell or future generations of CPUs, because at the moment they roughly have a ~2 year advantage on performance and ~1 year advantage in process technology.
In terms of single-threaded performance, it won't come close to that. But if you are talking total throughput where you take into account the IMC + HT then it could very well come to 50%+, obviously it depends on the specific application.
Yeah sorry I got my models confused, the Q8300 is $90 and Q9300 is $99, at those prices I'd definitely go with the Q9300.
The P35-DS3s aren't renowned for reaching very high FSBs with quads, but 400MHz FSB should be OK. It'll be a massive boost over your E2180 in games.
For gaming, you're better off with the i5. The X6 1090T is faster at tasks that use all 6 cores, like video encoding.
Like I said previously though, it's probably worth the wait for SB, especially if you intend to keep this new system as long as your last system. ;)
Just go with the $99 Q8300, overclock it to 3GHz+ and call it a day until your next big upgrade which will probably be Sandy Bridge or Bulldozer. It's not worth investing in a new DDR2 platform at this point in time, and I definitely wouldn't suggest a new DDR3 build with SB right around the corner.
To see a noticeable improvement in games from an overclocked Q6600 @ 3GHz+ you need a Core i5 or i7 quad... Phenom IIs aren't much faster per clock, in fact I think they're about equal IPC wise.

Not exactly... there will be S1356 later on in the year as the replacement for LGA1366, but that's not really relevant for LGA1155 SB users.
LGA1155 will be the new 'mainstream' socket for Intel for at least the next 12 months, why would you buy into an EOL socket right before the new socket...
It's about 2 leagues below if you consider that it needs 3.6GHz to be 1 league below a stock 2.66GHz i5, which itself can be overclocked to 4GHz. ;)
Don't get me wrong, the Q6600 was a great chip for its time, but I think it's at the stage where it'll start bottlenecking a mid range GTX460 /...
Not to put a dampener on this thread, but the Q6600 is starting to show its age in the latest games...
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Starcraft II
Civilization 5
Of course these benchmarks are shown with the Q6600 @ 2.4GHz, at 3GHz+ it will be faster, but compared to Core i5 / i7 it's not...
Indeed... it should be pointed out that the i5 / i7 chips are in a differerent price class, especially after the latest AMD price cuts. At comparable price points the AMD chips stack up well, with the exception of the X6 1075T vs i5 750.
Btw, I think Turbo was disabled because on the previous...
More Intel ownage, COD:BO numbers are out:
http://www.techspot.com/review/336-cod-black-ops-performance/page8.html
Phenom really gets it ass handed to it in this game... and thats with stock i5 / i7s @ 2.66GHz! Imagine what a ~5GHz SB chip would do to it!
It would literally double...
It depends on the game. GPU bound games will see little benefit, as can be expected. In games that are CPU bound, I'd say 50%+, sometimes even close to 100% in games like SC2, considering SB chips are touted to overclock to ~5GHz on air. That's already a 39% clockspeed advantage over an X4 @...
Just to make sure, do you mean BF2 or BF:BC2? Because the CPU requirements of these two games are drasticaly different! BF2 runs fine on any modern CPU (AMD or Intel) but BC2 needs a fast quad for best performance.
For strategy games, definitely the i7 (or i5 as others have mentioned for better bang for buck). Intel is a lot faster when it comes to CPU bound games:
http://www.techspot.com/review/305-starcraft2-performance/page13.html (SC2)...
That's a great price for the Q8300. Definitely a worthy alternative to the Q6600, even if its a little slower at stock, and harder to overclock due to the low default multi.
A new CPU would help in decompressing large files, Illustrator and Photoshop and when you game (depending on your GPU).
If you can get a decent price for your E6850 on Ebay or something, it might be worth swapping it out for a used Q6600. You're probably only looking at a price difference of...
If the AMD X2 unlocked to 4 cores it will be beat the QX6700 easily (assuming both are at stock clocks) since Phenom II is about equal to the 65nm C2Qs clock for clock. Even if it only unlocked to 3 cores, it will be close to the QX6700.
Yeah thats right. But even without overclocking, we're looking at close to 20% jumps in default clockspeed plus additional IPC improvements in the ~10% range. So that equals a 30% gain right there. With overclocking that figure jumps out to ~40%. Definitely worth waiting 2 months for I'd say.
Are you overclocking? If yes, the i5 will be a lot better, it has a lot more headroom to overclock (1GHz+ vs ~500MHz on the Phenom) but at stock speeds it's not that much faster than the Phenom except in games.
Also, if you can wait, consider Intel's upcoming Sandy Bridge chips. They won't be...
Stick it out until Sandy Bridge I say. You'll be kicking yourself when everyone is running their shiny new SB chips @ 5GHz in 2 months time and you're stuck with an 'old' 4GHz i5 / i7 ;)
Average framerates can be a bit misleading... its the minimum framerates that people notice, when theres heaps of explosions and other effects going on and framerate dips big time...
Well a Phenom or C2Q is not an i7 is it? ;) Phenom II is roughly equal to C2Q 65nm (Kentsfield)per clock and slightly slower than 45nm Penryn. i7 is a step above all these chips.
Like I said, perhaps 2 years ago they were neck and neck, but newer games really favour the i5 / i7 from what I've...
Posts like these are so misleading. Sorry but generalisations like these really don't help.
There are CPU bound games, and GPU bound games... not everyone plays Crysis or MW2 exclusively. Heard of RTS games? Starcraft II and Civilization 5 for example...
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3871/the-sandy-bridge-preview-three-wins-in-a-row/1
Sandy Bridge will be LGA1155 initially (not to be confused with the current LGA1156 platform, which will not be compatible). The high end socket or LGA1366 replacement will be LGA2011 which is coming out in H2 2011.
Not worth it IMO. Especially when you're gonna give yourself a cold! Although you can always use your Q6600 as a heater... hehe. ;)
Normally I'd say sell whatever you have and upgrade to an i5 or i7 rig, or wait 2 months for Sandy Bridge. However, Eyefinity resolutions tend to be *VERY* GPU...
:D
Sorry but that name is hilarious!!!
What are the amp ratins for that PSU? A lot of 'yumcha' PSUs have big wattage ratings but woeful amp ratings, often being outperformed by ~400W name brand PSUs. It may very well be holding back your CPU overclock.
I'd say your CPU is a little slow...
GTX 460 CPU scaling guide
The GTX 460 1GB is close in performance to the HD6850, and you can use the overclocked GTX460 results as a guide to HD6870 performance.
Shows the difference between the AMD Athlon II X4, Phenom II X4 and X6 in games. As many have said, go for the Phenom II if you...
From the SB thread in the Intel section...

If those prices are accurate then it's a MUCH better buy. 25% more headroom (5GHz vs 4GHz) plus 10 - 15% increase in IPC... for the same prices as i5 / i7 chips.
Anyway, back on Bulldozer...
Apart from SuperPi runs at XS, which are pretty much meanlingless (to me anyway) not really... all we got to go by are the results from Anandtech, although we can expect performance to increase a few % from those results as the SB chips didn't have a functioning turbo mode. General consensus...
Well I'm in Australia so the prices aren't directly comparible (although in saying that our $ has reached parity with the USD!) but I sold my Q9550 for $250, MSI P45 Neo-F mobo for $50 and 4GB DDR2-800 for $100, so $350 all up.
Ended up buying a 2nd hand i7 750 / Gigabyte P55-UD3 /...
I sold my Q9550 for a very good price and went to an i5 750 @ 4GHz... with change to spare. :) Can I notice the difference between the two? Not really. It does bench quicker though. And if you end up breaking even (or making a small profit like I did :P) then why not? Its free performance.
Hang on to them until Sandy Bridge arrives. You can upgrade the GPUs in the meantime for a bit more gaming punch this Xmas, they'll be bottlenecked to an extent (not so much the QX9650, but the E8400 will be in quad optimised games like BC2) but its not like you're gonna hang on to the systems...
