IMO it's more a proof of concept than a solution and I'd only use it if my receiver didn't offer analog inputs, but just to stop this "I know but I won't tell you!" nonsense, here it is for anyone who wishes to give it a try...
The 'generic hardware' allows to use the card-specific routines, therefore the final result can be the output of Sensaura or Qsound algorithms. However with 'generic software' the user is at the mercy of CL, in reality it's passable (for realtek users it's better than the generic hw) and most...
It would imply a native OpenAL device implementation, which 'talks' directly to the soundcard without intermediaries and can be enumerated independently from the 'Generic Software' and 'Generic Hardware' devices. Those fallback implementations rely on MMSYSTEM/DS and DS3D respectively, thus...
The only data you should need to verify better 3D positioning can be obtained from rightmark 3Dsound or a sample DS3D/OpenAL program, do your homework. As a hint, play with the vertical axis and short distances to the listener with a 'dry' mix. Now would you care to explain how do you came to...
The X-Fi isn't better because Donnie says so, it uses more refined 3D positioning algorithms. Whether the improvements are enough to say it "kills" the A2 is a matter of taste, but it's not too adventurous to say that most of the people who have owned both cards find the X-Fi more convincing in...
Here's the howto for the A2ZS and X-Fi series:

If the original A2 comes with the same DELL_FP the same adapter will work.
Last week frys had a promotion on the Elite Pro, it was $160 after MIR. Those who catch it in time got the best bang/buck deal (unless one has an opamp fetish).
~$200 is the price most often quoted around. I don't really know if it's correct but if the Prelude is being positioned as an enthusiast/audiophile product it is likely that they will sell it for a price similar to their current flagship.
Depending on the designer's implementation, rapid-fire guns can consume a handful of 3D buffers. The stinger in the original Unreal used more than 8 buffers by itself, in a BF2/2142map with 8-10 players firing a automatic guns at the same time it could surpass the 64 buffers figure.
However I...
CL's ebay store has this set:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Creative-Inspire-GD580-5-1-Digital-Computer-PC-Speakers_W0QQitemZ170109875516QQihZ007QQcategoryZ51094QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
It comes with a decoder very similar to the DDTS100 but it only supports plain DD/DTS and 5.1 speakers, also it...
At a $200 price tag and only one swappable opamp, potential buyers will have a hard time deciding among a 'superior sound quality' with a Prelude or putting down $30 more (or possibly saving if there's a rebate) and getting an overall 'clean' signal and a lot of I/O options with an Elite.
In this site there are a lot of DIY projects around the Audigy:
http://www.electricstart.de/
The A2/X-Fi header has a different pinout, but it is basically a matter of finding the SPDIF, VCC & GND pins in the AD_EXT header.
You can try something like this:
http://www.twam.info/spdif.html
(it's in german use google or babelfish)
that particular link is for optical out but you can get an optical-in bracket.
You can also try to get a second-hand Audigy 2 I/O drive.
I'm no security expert but opening the HTML source of the page it has only two script blocks, and both are embedded flash banners one at the top for advertising and one at the bottom for a top100 ranking.
IMO the only thing the page will attempt to download and install is a flash plugin from...
I think I understood your post on DSP FX and its motivation, it was further comments on it what triggered my response. As long as someone cares to back an statement I can't tag it as annoying, it doesn't matter if I agree or disagree. It's the hyperbole what irks me.
I'm sure that EAX5-like...
At what point exactly Digital Signal Processor became equivalent to Digital Signal Processing? The use of a 'gaming grade' or a 'professional grade' reverb engine on a processor is not an indicative of how advanced is a processor architecture or its capabilities. As long as a processor is...
I think that 512-voice quote must be put in perspective, first of all, it is done in one of cell's SPEs which is a core with an instruction set not too different from a DSP. Second, on a soundcard it's easy to verify the voice number claimed, you can fire a OpenAL/DS3D sample, create and play...
If you are mostly interested in headphone use, some people here have recommended the EMU 0202 and EMU 0404 USB interfaces, both have integrated amplifiers and can dub as an external DAC for another device.
OpenAL is the answer CL came with when it was evident that EAX would no longer work on top of DS3D, but it's not on their hands to decide which API or middleware will be used by game developers, or to change games that were shipped.
ALchemy is the stopgap solution for the games that are...
You can list every single bug on every soundblaster but the lack of a DS3D wrapper doesn't make a set of drivers incompatible with Vista and no vendor has to make an effort to make pre-Vista games work.
And to my knowledge CL's leverage is that there are no other options aside of ALchemy...
HDMI allows transport of up to 8ch@24/192. That particular format is not mandatory, BD/HDDVD discs are still restricted to 96kHz in multichannel and 6ch@16/48 would still be better than DD/DTS real-time encoding.
The CA20K1 is "up to the task" to handle several 24/192 streams, prehaps not 128...
That step is for using ALchemy on games that are not automatically recognized, it means to copy the dsound files included with ALchemy in the same path the EXE file of the game is.
glavada's instructions are basically install the latest CL drivers and then the YP suite, the intermediate step...
Well, to be fair it was paper-launched in '99 because around that time A3D 3.0 was also announced. It was until the Audigy launched when there were some tangible demos and games.
If we can take the Cmedia based cards from Auzentch as a precedent, there's a good chance that this card will use 'regular' X-Fi drivers with some minor customization. It will be interesting when someone with spare time can figure out a mod that enables real-time encoding for older X-Fi cards...
It's not a big difference because the youp-pax drivers are leaked drivers from CL itself, which then are customized, removing the 'bloat'. They're similar to the omega drivers for ati.
The catch is that 'regular' IDE cables are keyed in a pin that is in use in the AD_EXT header, it must be an unkeyed IDE cable like the one MrE linked.
I really haven't tried AC3 filter, can't comment on that. I can confirm that DD/DTS SPDIF-In decoding works with an Audigy and with an X-Fi under XP. I haven't bothered to try with external sources under Vista, internal sources work for X-Fi with the Dell workaround.
Audigy and X-Fi drivers for XP allow decoding of external sources as long as a drive is attached, the problems that sometimes arise with consoles are lagging and clipping on loud sounds.
Vista drivers still don't officially support DD/DTS (and who knows if someday they will), but using an...
The drivers available from CL include Audio Console, for the extra software you need to download the leaked 'youp-pax' suite.
Windows Update also recognizes the X-Fi and installs signed drivers, but the console is not included.
Any retail Audigy or X-Fi with an I/O drive, internal or external, is able to decode from external sources (the I/O dongle doesn't enable external decoding). AC3filter supposedly works on all soundcards with SPDIF-In, but I haven't tested it.
