Runs way better than I expected on an E7200 @ 3.8ghz, 6GB RAM, P35 DS3L rev2 board, Powercolor 5850 @ stock, it's just smooth. Really surprised after all I read beforehand.
This is @ 1680 x 1050 with 4 x AA, 16 x AF, all settings maxed except for shadows, which are at at medium, and HBAO on.
What I do is perhaps not of use to the original poster, I dunno. But it might be to someone else..
Because I have a lot of hard drive space, I dual boot XP and 7. The OSs are installed completely independent of one another, I use the BIOS boot menu to select operating systems. The only hassle...
Indeed. I always like hearing a solution to a problem I've encountered yet wasn't able to solve.
So kudos to Spare-Flair for sorting out the problem and coming back to share the solution, others including myself will all benefit.
If there was a beer smiley I'd use it.
:)
I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread because I never did find a solution to this and I think k1pp3r might be right unfortunately.
This also used to happen to Windows 98 (but much sooner :D) and by that time, the software was completely fubar.
To the OP, sorry I can't help in any way but a...
Agree with above posters.
And it may only be your left Alt key that works to do this, it is on my PC. Using the right Alt key and hitting Enter does nothing.
I'm running DX10 @ 1680 x 1050 with everything on highest settings aside from shadows which are just at 'high', and texture settings to the 2nd highest level, 2 x AA and vsynch on. This is with an E7200 @ 3.8 and a 4850.
What helped enormously was removing all the Tablet applications in...
Strange, I can't recall ever having a problem with ATI drivers in the last 4-5 years. Perhaps your system was at fault or not optimised as you are in a large minority these days. A few years back maybe, but I find that hard to believe nowadays.
Still, go buy an NVidia card. Just be wary that...
You must have very good case cooling. :)
Not surprised at that though, the S1 is in a class of its own. The trade off is the space it takes.
But when I listen how quiet this PC is, it's worth it.
Well done and enjoy!
:D
No probs, hope they help. :)
Sure, you can run it passively. I tried it. My temps were 50c idle and 67c load, my case is fairly well ventilated. I want to possibly voltmod the card and overclock it more, so that's why I attached the fan. But it's very nice to know that even if that fan fails...
Yes. I used Zalmans for both RAM and voltage regulators, didn't bother with the S1 sinks due to reports of them dropping off. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, I just didn't want to take the chance.

Well, I went from an X2 4200 939 @ 2.6Ghz + Radeon 3870 @ stock to an E7200 @ 3.8Ghz + Radeon 4850 @ 700/1100.
The difference is astounding. And I should also add that I had the 3870 with the E7200 for a couple of weeks before the 4850 came out. And the difference was VERY noticeable even...
Ooo dear, seem to have hit a nerve there.
"I had no idea that ATI even still made an AGP cards"
Right. So while you mean well, if I followed your advice and spent good money on a vastly inferior product when I could have gotten a better deal elsewhere, I wouldn't be too pleased. Just...
The CPU would bottleneck for sure, but you'd be able to run games with more eye candy.
If you game at high res, getting a good card would certainly improve performance. However, if you game at 1074 x 768, your CPU would hold you back much more.
AGP is easy to get working correctly, the odd flaw with ATI's 2600XT but in the main, AGP is easy to set up.
He clearly said he doesn't want to do a full system rebuild, so dropping in a new AGP card is the solution.
Ah, well that's different. If you don't game, any old AGP card will do.
Just get the cheapest NVidia card you can find, if NVidia is your preference.
But if you intend to do *any* gaming, you need a 3850 for best results.
What!!!??
So you're advising to get a 6800XT (completely gimped 6800GT, nothing like the performance of an HD3850) or a 7600GS (gimped 7600GT, also nothing like the performance of an HD3850)?
You are talking absolute bullshit.
If you want the best AGP card, the only choice...
Well this is true.
Perhaps graphics cards these days should have different captions on the box instead of the standard "blistering framerates" ones.
"1KW of gaming heat"
:D
Not sure your statements are fair, you are comparing a 9600GT with S1 to stock cooled 4870.
Still, know what I'd be doing in your situation, given that the very good cooler on your 9600 also just happens to fit your 4870...
Been tweakin a bit, gained a small amount extra.
3DMark 06 score: 13429
SM 2.0 score: 5536
SM 3.0 score: 6431

E7200 @ 3.8Ghz, RAM @ 800MHz (1:1), and the 4850 is at 700MHZ/2200MHz all on Gigabyte P35 DS3L rev 2.0...
Don't listen too much to the stuff about 'bottlenecking', vastly exaggerated imho. The 4850 would be a great acquisition, going from a 6600GT especially.
Sure it'll bottleneck some, but you WILL get a good increase in performance. So what if it won't do 100fps? What a p!sser to have to game...
They would, I'm using these on both the RAM and PWMs with an Asus 4850 and an Accelero S1 Rev 2 cooler, so exactly the person to tell you.
Check this: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk197/bobchonga/DSC00506.jpg
I bought 2 packs of those blue Zalman sinks because I read too much about...
Single card, E7200 processor @ 4 x 900 = 3.6Ghz (3d mark and Windows wrongly report it as being 3.8Ghz. CPU-Z shows the correct frequency). 2GB DDR2 800 cheapass RAM and a Gigabyte P35 DS3L motherboard. Using a Corsair VX550 power supply as well, which might or might not be important.
I...
Not really, you just have to take the usual care as you would when fitting a CPU heatsink. I'd never done a graphics card before, but it's fairly easy.
I'm hoping it can go further than 700, it handles 700 very easily. Gonna wait and see what develops in the next few weeks now with 3rd party...
Got one on my 4850.

It's now running happily at 700/1100 at those temps.
Well...
Oblivion also runs completely smooth at 1680 x 1050 with 8 x AA, 16 x AF and Qarl's texture pack. Looks amazing.
Stunning performance for the price. I've slapped an Accelero S1 Rev 2 and a 140mm Yate Loon fan on it, makes it now idle at 30c, load at 41c and be clocked at 700/1100.
The...
