I have onboard sound, and I had to download the latest driver from the manufactorer (gigabyte), and it came with a soundmgr utility. Using this utility, I could set it to 6 ch audio and test it. Check your motherboard manual, it should go over how to setup 5.1 sound.

Goto radio shack and get a Coxial Cable video amplifier. If you have access to where the cabling is(in basement hanging from ceiling or wall most of the time) plug that amplifier in right before the cable running to your room. I had this exact problem and that fixed it. FYI -Toad
