I looked at the SFF "FAQ" and its says to just get a zalman 7000 or 7700.

but!

what if I don't want a zalman?

so I thought it would be interesting to see what HS/F everyone is running in their X-Qpacks. sort of a running data-base of what works, what's been tried, etc. and some comments on how much extra space you have on each side of the HSF and over the top.

stock AMD Opteron heatsink with the 4 heatpipes

I have replaced the fan with a regular 25mm high fan (instead of the thinner 15 or 20mm stock fan)

Its fits

ditto.

I'm surprised how much people like the 7xxx zalmans despite the fact that they're overpriced and are terrible coolers in comparison to the stock AMD heatpipe cooler.

not finished with the build yet but will be running the amd heatsink with 4 heatpipes off an fx series. cant seem to beat it for 20 bucks on ebay.

Same here, looks and works great! I just sold 2 of 'em in the for sale thread for $18.00 each, shipped! You can see it in the back ground in this photo....EZ

Some people (like me) are obsessed w/ quietness. From everything I dug up, the Zalman is quieter than the AMD stock one. It really is extremely quiet..I can only hear my drives move occasionally and have to look at the lights to make sure the computer is on ;-)

I am using a Swiftech MCX64V on my processor and a Swiftech MCU159 on my northbridge.

they are also nice looking coolers if you want some bling.

I'm using a Microcool Northpole XE chipset HSF on my P-M 780 ES in mine as well as another on the chipset itself. Super silent and obviously tons of room around it.

I made a list on the FAQ page. Keep them coming and I will just add them.

It seems most people use the stock or the Zalmans which is why only those were mentioned.

Anyone know when that zalman 8000 is supposed to come out? And not to thread jack, but any word on the AeroCool case (the one based on the q-pack, it's april ;))

The Zalman 8000 is not even on their website :(

The Aerocool Coolbox was said to be released in April...someone told me this and it might not be true. Could have been a paper launch :)

Ok, so I've heard mixed opinions here.

I just ordered an Opteron 146 OEM and was told that it won't come w/ any HSF... I'm gonna use the QPack, should I hunt down the stock HSF? or one of these zalmans?

Also, how much of a difference in performance is it between aluminum+copper and just copper?

Using an aftermarket cooler usually drops your temps by +-8-10c. Then from there the AlCu to Cu versions differ about +-2-3c between eachother.

If you can get the stock HSF, it will be good. (-;

I'm using XP-90 in my cube case. Because of the CPU socket position, I can tie a 90mm fan right above the heatsink.

also, though I don't have it, I know it will fit. the Silverstone NTO 3. also known as the nitro 3 or nitrogen 3.

The temperature I was using was on the case and is incorrect (it was correct at lower temperature ranges 30-44) - I hit about 59ºC under load according to the Gigabyte utility. I'm going to edit my original post to correct that
Update: I'm 55º stable in Prime95 @ 3.3GHz & 1.45v. 3.4GHz only lasts about 10 minutes under prime95 but plays games like bioshock without a problem. My whole issue is Core 0 is hitting 8ºC higher than the other cores. Quad's just don't OC as easily as dualies but I'm still stoked about this rig :) I'm using Speedfan for temps now - the gigabyte utility had "issues".
- UPDATE - I have my rig Prime95 stable @ 3.5GHz @ 60ºC under load on the hottest core, the other 3 are 1-2º lower. 1.55v is needed with my G0 chip.

Nice Build SGA|JesusFreak , whats that kvm switch for in the background ?

The new Qpacks look pretty nice.

I'm using a stock CT479 Heatsink on my Pentium M:

You can also see i modded the stock casefan to use the Motherboard case fan header. That way I can control the speed with speedfan and keep the noise down. :D

Also I just picked up a new CNPS7000 ALCU led for $10. I want to be able to run the cpu fan on 5v and have good temps with little noise.

Yep - that was the better part of a day - we had a good time donig it, we're not going to paint anything black ;)

well everytime i have disassembled my pc and do what ever i wanted to do to it, i ended up making the cable management alot better.

You can probably tell by the pics that we're already pretty good at that (I've done about 30 mini's now). Btw, in the liquid one, that's a full 650w Seasonic with all it's full-length cables - that's not easy to hide ;)

yes yes. other stick was transferred to dimm3 for dual channel operation.
