Switchable Graphics Feature

This is a super cool feature that allows you to switch between your integrated Intel X4500 and
your discrete mobile GPU. Sadly some laptop manufacturers are not implementing this feature
in their products. I can tell you that HP will not have the feature in at least their first 3 Centrino 2
laptops. I talked to some laptop manager guy on the phone and it really seems like HP does
not get why some people may like this feature.

Here is a site with some good switchable graphics info.

I'll be getting a ThinkPad X200... but I'm curious as to how much DDR3 is going to cost. I need 4GB.

No asus, no sager(compal/clevo) no msi on your list? They are already here, and have been since the release of centrino 2.

I am wondering how the new T and W series thinkpads are going to be like.

I added all the Asus, Sager and MSI lappies that I could find. Did I miss any? Are there other
manufacturers I need to look at?

Those Thinkpads are looking mighty sexy. Makes me tempted to replace my Pentium M Thinkpad. To bad I have no excuse to replace it, as its a really kickass laptop and it doesnt slow down for anything I do that would make me consider a new one.

I need a laptop by the 24th, and I don't want to spend more than $1000. I was planning on a T61, but it looks as though it is about to be replaced. Should I wait and get the new lenovo line up? Will I be able to afford it? Will I get it in time for college?

I need mine before August 27th and even though HP said mine would be built and shipped on
August 4th, I just got an email that tells me it just shipped from Shanghai today.

So call up the manufacturer and ask them if they can get it to you by the 24th.

I'm currently in south korea.. Theres a handful of Samsung/LG Centrino 2 notebooks.

Anyone have any exp with the mentioned brands? I would love to grab one and take it back with me to the states. But im worried about any warranty issues.. :(

You should be ok, though I would first check with contacting the manufacture first. I have sometimes seen it go both ways.

Are you talkin' bout the 17"?

The 15.4" is what got my attention. Why are manufacturers so unwilling to put a high end card in a 15.4? A given resolution is a given resolution, without regard to the size of the panel. If I need an 8800/9800-class GPU to drive 1680x1050 or higher, I need it just as much on a 15.4 as I do on a 17. This seems to be one of the few that does that. I wish I could get it from Sager for about 400 less. Specc'ed out the way I'd like it, it's just shy of 2k.

<sigh>

double OMG . . The 15.4 incher with 1920x1200 is certainly hot hot hotter.

I found another MSI Centrino 2 laptop. It is a tiny 12".

I have been plugged in so far. I will do some battery testing this weekend though.

I am taking my laptop to PAX with me but battery life is not a huge concern because I am
flying Virigin America which has a power outlet for every passenger and I am not sure how
much I will use it my laptop while I am at the convention center away from usable outlets.

Is that the HP dv5t? I just canceled my Dell Studio 15 order and got one with these specs -

1680x1050 display
Intel P7350 2GHz
2GB RAM
250GB 5400RPM HDD
9600M GT

ONly downside vs the studio 15 is that it was $100 more, even after stacked student discount, 5% off coupon, and $100 instant rebate - and also that it has 1GB less RAM and 250gb instead of 320gb hdd. But it has a 9600M GT vs HD3450 mobility, a 1680x1050 screen vs 1440x900, and new 45nm processors. Supposedly battery life isn't great, but we'll find out with your testing I guess!

Yes. Those pictures are of my dv5t.

That P7350 is very strange. It is not listed on Intel's site and it is not mentioned in their Centrino 2 materials.

Intel's Updated Mobile CPU PDF

Check out this site before you choose that CPU.

Also this is very important:

When your PC is loading for the first time, before you get to Windows there are various HP
videos that you can watch. The audio during these videos sounds distorted and terrible and
you may think that your laptop's speakers or sound is broken. Calm yourself. Once you get
into Windows, your audio should sound fine. The problem is either the sound quality of those
videos or that the sound driver is not working like it should outside of Windows.

When shopping for a laptop, is it important (or is it worth it) to get one with a Blu-Ray drive? I've noticed two Asus that I really like for different reason. One being a 15.4" and has a Blu-Ray drive but only offers 1440x900 resolution and the other one being a 17" without a Blu-Ray drive but offers 1920x1200 resolution. All other specs are the same. Which one is a better buy especially they are both the same price, too! I can't decide...Help...

I'd go for the 15.4 - that's a nice resolution for the screen size and it's more portable than a 17". Also I think 17" 1920x1200 is a little too much.

mentok, did you get any battery life results with that notebook? I took your advice and cancelled the P7350 order, reordered with the same specs but P8400, still under $1100.

Lots of Lenovos just got added to their site and also my list in the first post.
