I already have a thread on anandtech about this. If you do read it, be sure to get all the way to the end.

OK. So my friend John has a birthday coming up in a week and my other friend and I were looking into getting him a new graphics card. He's since backed out of splitting a 7900 gs as it's more than he wants to spend. Then I thought that I could get a gig of RAM for John to supplement the 512 that he already has in his system. Now my other friend is considering splitting the cost of either 1 or 2 gigs. My first question is if 2.5g would be much better than 1.5g in his situation? This would be assuming John would buy a decent card for himself in the near future.

Also, is there any reason to buy RAM in a 2 piece kit as opposed to getting two pieces individually? It seems like buying them individually would be much cheaper especially considering the $15 PayPal instant rebate discount that's been floating around.
