I have tried to read around the net, but really could not find much info on this.

I am an old school gamer. I use to run a high refresh rate on my 22inch CRT eizo monitor back in the day. I use to run 1600x1200@85hz.

I am going to be buying a single 1080p 120hz monitor. I want that smoothness I felt back in the days before I made the plunge to LCD.

Now I know these new 3d 120hz monitor can so 1080p @ 120hz. This takes some serious muscle power to run a game at 120fps at all times with rarely any dips.

So my question is to people out in the community. What does it take to max out BF3 with Vsync on at 120hz (120fps)? Will I need 2x7970s? or 2x7950s? (overclocked or stock)

Alot of reviews I have read put what the minimum is for a single card, but I am having a hard time finding some decent crossfire results with minimums (or at least legit decent hardware websites). The better minimum framerate, the closer the game would stay at 120fps with Vsync enabled.

Any info would be really appreciated.

Your gonna need 2 7970's for singleplayer 120+ avg. For multi you will need an equally impressive CPU to pair with the 7970's. An OCd 3930k should do very well as BF3 will utilize all cores. 1200 in gpu's and 600 in CPU is a somewhat balanced and very powerful setup.

2 7970s will be solid for BF3.. prob with everything maxed out as well. If you cant/dont want to overclock the cpu and have the money a stock 3960 runing at 3.9ghz (w/ Turbo) will be enough for multiplayer. I know cuase i just upgraded and at first ran 2 7970s with that cpu at stock clocks for 2 nights before installing the 3rd card and then finally ordering the 4th card for eyefinity (tripple screens).

That setup with a single screen with be smooth no doubt!

Yea im not worry about my CPU. I got my 2500k at 4.8ghz. I would hit 5ghz, I just dont think .1v is worth 200mhz.

Good to know 2x7970 would max the baby out....Even if I had to disable MSAA to get a solid 120fps i would be a happy camper

I think 120fps would be doable at ultra/max settings with everything else on at 1920x1080 with 2 bad boys. ;)

i avg just over 90 with a 6970 dc'd a bit and xfired with an OC'd non-unlocked 6950

but I think I need to up my OC on my 2500K(@4.1 now) to get much more

Accually I had a 6990 @ 6970 speeds, and I would dip down in the low 40's while playing BF3.

So i know for a fact it wouldnt do it.

With Trifire 6990/6970 I can do 120fps/120hz no problem on 32 man vanilla servers, 64 man it usually goes between 70-120 depending on how good the server is. Worst case scenario is 64man BTK Gulf of Oman and I think you'd need to have highly overclocked 7970's to maintain 120fps you might even have to drop MSAA completely. There's no question that 2 7950/70 can do it but it depends on how well they overclock some people are hitting 1200core and at that speed your minimum fps will be really high and ability to use 4XMSAA is guaranteed.

Let me tell you this much.
I use a CRT right now and I use 1024x768 @ 100 hz. I can't even maintain 100 FPS (unless I'm in a jet of course) at all times when using Ultra settings and 8xMSAA (with that blurry aa filter turned off). It's usually between 75 to 120 fps, with 64 player servers being closer to 75.

You're definitely not going to be getting 120 fps at 1080p with 1 card, unless you don't use any AA at all.

here are my settings

texture: ultra
shadow: high
effects: medium
mesh: ultra
terrain: ultra
terrain decoration: low
AA def: off
AA post: off
no motion blur
AF 2x
occlusion off

I am going to turn the ultras down to high and see if I even notice the quality difference and see what it does to FPS

3 7970s on 1 1920x1080 120hz screen was quite funny as hell really! So freakin fast it was unreal. I'm talking i seen frame rates in the upper 100-300 range on a 64 player karkand map server with everything maxed out. It was behond smooth!

Was this with the same system otherwise? MSAA enabled? I'm running 2x 6950's @ Ultra w/ FXAA and haven't dipped close to 40. Averaging 80-90 easily at 1920x1080. Both GPUs pegged at 99% - very impressive scaling. Granted it's not enough for your 120fps quest. I have noticed that if I play with my side monitors powered on (but still at 1920x1080 - sides go idle when the game launches) the scaling goes into the toilet. I've learned to simply switch them off before launching BF3.

Ditch MSAA and use one of the injectors for BF3.

That works great and looks great to me.

Is there a risk of being banned by using something like that? I see some oddly translated discussion in the thread you posted.

What kind of GPU utilization are you seeing at that low of a resolution?

8x msaa will be killing perf.

BF3 Ultra 4xMSAA at 1080p on a 120Hz monitor I'm averaging in the 90 -100fps range although it fluctuates occasionally from the 60's - 200. Even on Gulf of Oman 64 player I get in the 90's on average.

I leave off vsync and notice no tearing even at 170+fps

you dont need vsync, thats the beauty of 120hz

I played bf3 with a 6990+6970 on a 120hz monitor with an avg. fps of 120, min of 95 on ultra. I'm an old school crt 120hz gamer too so I know the difference. I find it hard to detect the difference in fps > 90 so the above setup worked great for me. Since then I switched to an eyefinity setup 3x1 at 6040x1080. Needless to say it's running min. 60 fps on medium - but eyefinity is too hard to pass up.

I'm able to get 100+ fps at all times in multiplayer with crossfire 6970s. All settings on low - I prefer butter smooth 120hz over pretty & laggy shineys.

Well if one can afford it and wants/needs extreme butter smooth just buy 3 7970s and max all the settings in BF3 and that baby will fly at 1920x1080 at 120hz no issues! I'm talking i've never seen anything so smooth in my life! haha. Really unreal.. almost looked 3D it was so fluid!

So you can have your cake and eat it too! No need for an ugly game.

BF3 is the first ever game that totally blew me away with the graphics and i WANT everything on and cranked out and 3 screens.

I'm Jelly but isnt that 1500+ in gpu's ?
I play at low settings because it's easier to see people in matches/scrims :(
