120Hz LCD Info Thread

Ugh, it's my birthday in a couple weeks and I'm kind of set on getting a 120hz screen. Is the Asus still the best choice right now??

++++ has them without the 3d Glasses for about 375, so it's around the right pricing.

LG is the best choice at the moment.

LG is the worst choice if you care about multi-monitor, with it's poor design with the bulge at the bottom. Plus keep a flashlight handy to be able to figure out where the touch-insensitive menu buttons are, I needed a flashlight to be able to see them even during the day.

If you never want to go multi-monitor the LG is the best on paper at the moment, but the difference is very slight.

I'd personally go with the Alienware if I was going to get back into 120hz. I bought the LG and despised it.

BenQ that is available soon (already available in europe) could possibly be much better than any of the current monitors, I would do yourself a favor and wait a little longer, to me this monitor looks like it will be THE 120Hz monitor to have for gaming especially. It's got a height and pivot adjustable stand, it's got "instant-mode" setting to minimize input lag, it's using LED backlight, the bezel is made of anti-reflective material, 2 of the top CS players have cooperated with BenQ to make sure it's as good for gaming as possible. It also got other nice features in the OSD as "AMA" which lowers the grey response time (sounds like overdrive which could be great to have an on/off switch for), it's got plenty color settings aside from the standard ones also gamma, hue and saturation adjustment. It's also able to display 17-19" both 5:4 and 16:9 and 1680x1050 16:10 with built-in scaling etc. Did I mention price? In Sweden it sells for ~4000 SEK (1000 SEK/100 USD lower than the Alienware!) that should translate to ~400 USD. Sounds like a monitor worth waiting a few more days for? Sure does to me. :p Some guys over at sweclockers.com should have it by tomorrow available for review.

I bought the Acer since it was that or the LG here in Japan. They were side by side.

The Acer is far superior to the LG. So I bought it. Really wanted the Asus, but they did not have it :/

The biggest advantage of LG 120 Hz monitor is that "thru mode" which eliminates input lag...

The LG and the asus have no input lag, the LG is the only one that also has a matte screen. I'm very happy with my one.

Some ppl in sweden got the BenQ XL2410T display today so more info should be known soon. But one interesting thing I could already point out is that a person managed to get 800x600@120Hz on a HD 2600 gfx card. ATI users rejoice. :p According to the manual it supports 120Hz at least at 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1920x1080 (important for CS nerds that tend to prefer 800x600 for some reason and CS is still big in sweden especially).

but i want glossy!

thats the one thing i hate about both my 46" lcd and 23" monitors they arnt glossy.

which is why im really leaning tword the Asus as soon as i can find it on amazon or newegg without the stupid 3d kit. but ill probly still wait to see how the BenQ fares before making any decision.

Asus is making a glossy 120Hz? I'd like to see that link. I think the last thing fast FPS players would want is annoying reflections. BTW, glossy reflections interfere with 3d, so I'd really like to see that link.

Isn't the VG236H glossy?

Ya, your right. "Conclusion:
The Asus VG236H is probably the best of the 3D screens we’ve tested, but as the previous screens were dull, cheap TN panels that’s not actually saying much. The Asus does have a brighter than usual backlight that should have punched through the 3D Vision (sun)glasses with more effect, but we didn’t experience much benefit from this or the vibrancy that the glossy screen coating gives. Worse still, we're yet to be impressed by the actual 3D effect either."

"The brightness value is very high on VG236H when the brightness setting is maxed out at 100% and this is important because the 3D glasses reduce brightness a lot.

One very annoying aspect, however, is the glossy panel. Because it reflects light it can affect the 3D experience if you play during daytime. And therefore I suggest that 3D on VG236H is enjoyed in dark rooms."

there are no windows in my pc area, its in a finished basement so i have no glare issues ever because light is easily controlled. which is why ive always had a soft spot for glossy screens

So basically you compute in the bat-cave. :D Do you have ambient lights on when you view your screen? I know from reading research just staring at a bright monitor in a dark room for long periods of time leads to eye strain. Most eye specialist say the ambient light behind and around your monitor is suppose to be the same brightness as the monitor. With glossy monitors your back to square one with the reflections then.

Not necessarily. Most people who use lighting to reduce eye strain put the light behind the display, so getting a reflection from that light source is rather unlikely.

God this is so goooood, I always play quake at 640*480 :D

Well only one person wrote some more detailed impressions about the BenQ so far, it's a user that's been using CRT and playing a lot of CS and he liked it at least. Everything was positive minus the viewing angles, no noticable input lags, acceptable colors when he used "photo" mode, the default mode is FPS but two guys already didn't like that mode (I wonder why people simply doesn't just setup all settings themselves :s). No backlight bleeding. It also seems to be possible to play with 120Hz with quite a lot of different resolutions (possibly more than those specified) even with a ATI gfx card and it has an own button to switch to 4:3 aspect ratio it seems. It also seems to be VERY bright as one of the guys commented the white colors were almost causing some eye-strain (I bet he's just using too much brightness & contrast).

You could keep track on this forum section as more people gets time to write about it http://translate.google.com/transla...ckers.com/forum/101-skarmar-och-tv-apparater/

Although not a strong reflection, you will get a reflection none-the-less. Even in a completely dark room, just the light from the screen's image will be enough to reflect the image of you sitting in front of the screen. Especially on dark areas being displayed.

i dont feel any eye strain playing in complete darkness looking at my monitor all day.

While we're talking about the vg236h, one reviewer found the black level to be bad.

- The display was equally unable to separate very dark grays from absolute black. As a result, we had a difficult time seeing what was happening in the Blu-ray version of Watchmen’s opening fight sequence.

I imagine gamers with this monitor turning up the brightness in games like Doom, Left 4 dead, singularity etc just to see what happens in those damn shadows hehehe. you loose a bit of "vibrance" if you adjust the image in the game digitally I think. Or is it 32bit so it's Ok a few points up?

So far there's been only positive feedback from the new BenQ 120Hz owners from the swedish forum. Would be nice to see some more in depth analytical review though but my hopes are high for it, looks like it's got very low input lag, good contrast, strong brightness, no (noteworthy) backlight bleed, good colors (not in default "FPS" mode) but with "Photo" or custom configs.

Now if they'd just release it in the USA.. or at least say when they plan to.

I believe it's been mentioned a few times that it will come to the US late October. So maybe a few more weeks.

Anyone have any info on the NEC F23W2A

It's listed as a 3D capable monitor on nvidias page but a quick google search didn't really turn anything relevant up.

Interesting, 3D capable NEC display, this is the first time I hear about it. I searched on google and it appears at least support for this monitor has been added to 3Dvision drivers at the same time it was done for the BenQ so perhaps we see some more info on this monitor soon!

in the description it is written that that passive method would halve the resolution, so, nogo. Then again, since only half-resolution needs to be output, other performance metrics could increase, such as fps. It would depend on your preference.

Did you or anyone try removing the bezel to get rid of the bottom hump?

720P aint bad... i find jaggies far less apparent in 3D anyway

grrrr... wish they would release this thing (benq) already..

i decided to just get the asus mainly for 3 reasons

it will match my current asus 23" for eyefinity when i dont need 120hz

i wanted a glossy screen

and i found it at buy.c without 3d kit for 344 shipped it arrives on the 18th

4:3 120Hz LCDs plz...
No more 16:9 or 16:10 crap.
Why do you want 4:3? Even RTS games like starcraft 2 and company of heroes benefit a wider view because you look down on the battlefield at an angle (but 16:9 is too wide imo). FPS games most of the content like the horizon an a passing car is benefiitial of wideness. but again some height is needed too 16:10 :)

i will.

the monitor i have right now is the

ASUS VH236H 23" 2ms(GTG), 300 cd/m2, 20000 :1 (ASCR)

new one

ASUS VG236HE 23" 2ms(GTG), 400 cd/m2, 100,000:1 (ASCR)

i should expect it to be brighter and hopefully impoved shadows and darker scenes

also newegg has it now

I have a feeling we're going to hear more about 120hz displays when the new AMD 6xxx series cards launch next week - they support 3D gaming via HDMI 1.4 and DP 1.2 standards. Of course, that means there must be monitors that support these standards (besides the TVs that already support HDMI 1.4) - leaked on several slides. I doubt they would announce launch support for these new formats without anything to show it on.

What I find curious is HDMI 1.4 does not require support for 1080p120hz (i.e. frame sequential 1080p @ 120hz). I believe it has the bandwidth for it, but it's not a HDMI 1.4a requirement. This launch should be interesting for all 120hz fans, whether you care about the new AMD cards or not.

Just because HDMI supports something doesn't mean it requires it, and unfortunately that means the manufacturer of a video card or monitor may decide to not support it. For example, the Dell U2711 has a native resolution of 2560x1440 which is supported through DVI, but its HDMI 1.3 port only supports 1920x1080, even though HDMI 1.3 can support 2560x1440. Inexplicable fail.

What is the best 120hz LCD available for purchase right now? I'd really like the BenQ, but they won't give any hint as to when they are releasing theirs or respond to email.
