24" Widescreen CRT (FW900) From Ebay arrived,Comments.

I'm not clear on how or if you can use the DPT94/Display Pro colorimeter with WinDAS for profiling. Didn't I read somewhere that adjustments in WinDAS can be done with a colorimeter's help?

Edit: I also read that almost every color adjustment can be performed with the monitor's OSD menu.

I don't entirely understand how ColorEyes Display Pro operates. Is it saving a color profile to Windows? I mean, sure you get a lot of the good stuff from the OSD adjustments, but what about the way colors turn out prettier after a full 76 step profiling? I could swear someone has mentioned a more permanent way to apply those settings to the monitor and it likely involves WinDAS.

Sorry for the consecutive edited posts. I wanted to delete anything I managed to answer myself and keep posts useful as possible.

If my desk holds a 60-something pound 22" Diamondtron, will it hold a 24" CRT that weighs 30 pounds more (roughly)? Or should I get a stronger desk? I don't know what to get for a desk but I can at least look. Right now I have a pretty thin/small hutch from Staples.

My desk wobbles all over the place and it's a cheap piece of junk that I got from best buy 6 years ago. It held the FW900 AND a 21" Trinitron a few years back and I never worried about it collapsing and crushing both of my legs underneath it. ;)

any small 2 or 3 foot wide desk is going to feel the weight of this monitor. the best way is an L shape corner desk. with it over the center leg it doesn't move at all.

Coloreyes does indeed generate a profile and saves it to your PC. Software which is color aware can load the profile and display colors as they were intended.
The other side of the calibration applies to the video cards LUT. This can be applied to even non color aware programs.
Games often change the LUT when loading, but there are a couple of programs which can override that change.

AFAIK, the only way to save a full calibration to the monitor is if it has a built in LUT. And unless I'm mistaken, the FW900 does not.

You can do a full white balance adjustment in WinDAS. I'm not exactly sure what's involved in that procedure nor what all it accomplishes during calibration, as it's a very technical process and seems to require some expensive gear. LAGRUNAUER has posted some info about it, see if you can find those posts.

You don't necessarily need an L shaped desk, or a large one. You just need to pick a desk with good supporting legs. Avoid single T legs due to excessive wobble. I have a desk with two column C legs. It once held 2xFW900s + 22" CRT + my weight (160lb) and is still going strong after 8 years.

What OS? What connection to the monitor (D-Sub or HVRGB)?

win7,dvi-vga

Go into your Catalyst Control center.

Go to "Desktops & Displays"

Click the lower monitor icon's pulldown menu and select "configure"

Now uncheck the "use EDID" and set your monitor up to these settings "1920x1440" and "160 Hz"

Works in getting my fw900 on all the right res'z and all the correct Hz ratings with RGBHV

Yeah, using that description, my desk has the Two Column C legs...with supporting beams in between. I think it's 48" wide. My old desk was 60" (we used to use for my wife's PC and mine). It was like $100 on clearance at Officemax. It does bend a little in the middle from the weight on it (made of cheap particle board), but I've been using it for like a year now.

Check my post from the past. I explain how to do this. What kind of cable are you using? If it is DVI to BNC forget it, you can't get above 60Hz without a cable swap, this is because ATI chooses not to support it. If you run DVI to VGA then just follow my instructions from a few pages ago.

Here is a link to some information I posted on the ATI / AMD site when I was trying to figure out how to fix it. http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=127245&enterthread=y

Hope this help!

Which ATI Video Card are you using? I know plenty of people using the 4k series of cards with DVI to BNC but nobody with the 5k series with DVI to BNC.

Did you have to edit the install file?

My bad. I am on a 4890. I forgot about the dreaded 5XXX series shite. Dont understand why it would be any different.

sorry to do this, but this thread seems like the best to post this. I have a Sony 21" Trinitron 520GS CRT monitor. I want to use it to game with my PS3. It only has VGA and 5 BNC. What would be the best way to connect this monitor to both my PC and PS3.
Max resolution is 1880x1440 and can do 1280x720.

I just realized my Sony 21" Trinitron 520GS CRT monitor won't be able to do 1080p since it's max resolution is 1800x1440. Wondering if it's still worth it to get it to only get 720p out of my display with my PS3.

That is correct afaik, since the PS3 outputs the signal at 60Hz and the HDfury just converts the digital signal to analog.

Edit: Ok so I got SOME sort of connection by simply unplugging and replugging the connector, but now the errors are (in order that they pop up):

ECS syntax Error: NG! NG! NG!
ECS syntax Error

Then when going to dynamic convergence, hitting "OK" makes it freeze, and hitting "Bypass" gives the errors:

REG write is NG -> can't access
Check Condition !

REG read is NG -> can't access
Check Condition !

V1 does not set the value
Check DasEdit data !

After hitting OK a couple of times it managed to give me a few bars to adjust, but it doesn't do anything.

DVI to BNC now fixed for the ATI 5850! It actually was a hardware hack to the cable..hehe. Here is a picture someone posted on how to do it.

I am now super happy with my ATI 5850 card! I can set refresh rates as high as I want because EDID is disabled by removing the pin!

Cool, now get it to work with eyefinity and mini-displayport and we will be all set!

Speaking of DisplayPort, has anyone gotten any active DP to VGA adapter to work at 2304x1440@80Hz (and maybe 1920x1200@95Hz, 1680x1050@109Hz, 1440x900@127Hz, and so on) with an ATI 5XXX card? I'm already using the two DVI ports so a passive adapter is out of the question. Using custom EDID files is no problem - I've made them myself from timings given to me, and I should be able to use openWARP's timing calculator to figure out my own for the FW900 if I can't find them elsewhere.

I should note that I don't care about getting Eyefinity working with the FW900. I already have my T221 set up as its own group - I don't want to combine them. I just want it as an extended desktop display.

EDIT: Well, I couldn't wait. I ordered the Monoprice adapter since I was already placing an order with them. It claims a 5.4Gb/s bandwidth which should be plenty (5.8Gb/s = 725MB/s, 2440x1440x85Hz = 236MB/s), and I figured with their money back guarantee there isn't much to lose if it doesn't work. I also got one of their double-shielded S-VGA cables and a direct DVI-I to VGA cable to see how they compare. At under $4 a cable it's worth a try.

I haven't got the cables/adapter in yet, but I hooked the FW900 up today.

Lesson learned: Unshielded 8" woofer drivers within half a foot of the monitor will seriously mess up the color of the monitor. I recently set up a pair of Klipsch KG2 speakers on my desk, and they definitely do not mix with the FW900.

Let me get this straight...

This monitor is such an AMAZING quality product, that there are over 300 pages of replies over 5 years with people still purchasing them and enjoying them?

Just curious.. :D I did want it too because of this thread, but I couldn't afford it back then.

Yup, that about covers it. My current setup is triple monitors - a Dell 3008WFP and two GDM-FW900s. I still prefer the image of the CRTs (except the one on the right is way off on the convergence, and the Windas thing isn't working right for me).

All of the GDM-F[W] series have great picture quality, as well as the NEC Diamondtrons.

Nice I have a IBM 21" P260 was a nice monitor in the day still nice mine is one year old but is a 2007 sat in a Pendot office for years, then I inherited it to my house.

Hey I have quesiton guys, do you know where to buy a windas cable? I have an older g500 that I would like to fix but I am having massive amounts of trouble tracking down the cable in which to fix it with. Can anyone help?

You probably cant afford it now either.. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=gdm-FW9***&_sacat=See-All-Categories

We hunt the bargains down.. kick in the door and have our way with the family members..

SIDE NOTE: If you haven't downloaded a 1080P rip of Evangelion 1.11 or 2.22 please do. The visuals of it through this monitor have cost me a few pair of pants..

Here is the 100MB sample clip they provided. Has some good, bright, colorful explosions but no subs http://www.mediafire.com/?m0oycttwkt1 Enjoy!

Here are the files that I am currently using on win7-64 bit...

SavedEDID.dat is my original:
http://headless.shackspace.com/FW900/SavedEDID.dat
NewEDID.dat is my replacement. It adds some key resolutions like 1680x1050x100hz and 1280x800x130hz, and 1600x1000 @ 120hz:
http://headless.shackspace.com/FW900/NewEDID.dat

testingmon.inf is the hacked 64bit inf file that I used for win7. It also sets the native res to 1280x800 so that win7's scaling shit doesn't fuck up everything.

DO YOU HAVE WINDOWS 7? or DO YOU HAVE XP?

If you have win7 and are using a 5XXX series ATI you must cut the DVI adapter pins like this

Just did my 2 month switch back to west-side.

Here are some of the shots I took while removing the Anti-Glare.

Yes they are in backward chronological order. Photobucket fail. I don't see a reason why the layer could not be put back on or replaced if yours was damaged. Same as tinting a window only thicker.

After I got it back together I experience this again... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLIP2LQKkL0&fmt=35
Only this time it was far worse. I tried waiting a few minutes but no change.. So I unplugged it and shot spray air through the side in case I dropped magical metal dust on some critical component while dusting off the top guard. After I did this the monitor did not power on.. at all.. no amber, green, clicks.. NOTHING.. So I said.. OH SHIT I KILLED MA BABY!!.. I tore her apart and opened up the top guard this time and checked connections and blew some more canned air through (Because two wrongs make a right) and powered it up while open. She turned on still freaking out the vertical hold but slower. So I shut it off. Closed it up and within 10 minutes it was perfect. Then I put the 12V fan I had under the east-coast monitor back and she started to stretch vertically again.. So that makes it seem that something on the bottom board (not visible in the pictures) needs to warm up and everything will be fine.. I guess I will see tomorrow.

I'm kinda bummed about SED not coming out Cannon ditched it except for commercial use.
On the other hand waiting everyday since 2007 for it to come out can finally come to a rest.
I hope OLED doesn't burn your eyes :^)

Yeah same here I would love a SED monitor. A 30" SED Widescreen on my desktop would be awesome. I wonder if SED went away because of how good OLED is, I hope so.
