There have been rumors flying back and forth over the past 2 weeks that Wal-Mart was readying a $299 HD-DVD player. Those rumors have now been put to bed as both parties are saying the original information was incorrect. It should be noted that neither side really closed the door on the matter however.

Unfortunately, it seems that the firm pulled the trigger a bit too soon on a hopeful order, as a recent retraction on the company's website insinuates that Wal-Mart simply inquired about their ability to "provide a schedule" along with "cost and quantity" details for Wally World to evaluate. Currently, it seems that the "capacity is still under consideration," but it did leave the door open to believe that this idea may still be churning in the background by cordially inviting anyone with an up-to-snuff manufacturing facility to ping them for more details.

Yeah, but.. when you buy electronics from Wal-Mart.. You know it's going to be crap! The DVD players I have seen in the Wal-Marts around here look like they would break if you farted in thier direction to loudly.

Wal-Mart might have some good deals on some things, but the quality of thier electronics, for the most part, leaves much to be desired.

Since when is Engadget a source of valid information?

"We are sorry to correct the statement that we have two million HD-DVD players order from Wal-Mart and manufactured by China Great Wall Group. The actuality is that we had not received yet. We are asked to provide the schedule to Wal-Mart and cost to determine the quantity even more than two million, if the cost is good enough and timing is correct. So the capacity is under consideration. Any qualified manufactured base group will be welcome. "

Looks like Wal-Mart is shopping around for a bid on sub $200 HD DVD players.

Since the drive ACTUALLY costs $10 more than the $35 18X DVD burners we have, Ill wait for all the crap to end and the price to reach reality.

Call me when it gets to $45 for a BR/HD burner.

usually they're not the uber-high end stuff, but they sell *decent* stuff, and a lot of times you get some of the best hackable gear there :). Sure, it's not going to last 500 years, but when it's $39 for an upscaling DVD player you don't *need* it to last that long :)
