2x512 matched sticks vs 1gig single stick

Generally speaking are 2 x 512 matched sticks running in dual channel better than 1 x 1GB stick?

Yes, the memory controller can access 2 x 512 simultaneously. Dual channel is always better than single channel, all other things being equal.
