300mm Barcelona Wafer

What this can mean is cheaper cpu's, and a bigger supply pool making it more accessible to everyone.
I hope these things come out soon. I haven't upgraded my processor in over 2 years(3000+ still does a good job). Lets hope this can gives everyone a reason too.

Maybe they should have packaged those instead of showing the waffer around.

Still exciting news though.

It probably wasn't a usable wafer.

AMD has mastered the stalling act. People are supposed to be satisfied with a picture?

Was about to say, it's still the same "Shock and Awe with NOTHNG" PR trick AMD's been pulling for the last several months...

Kyle, was there any benchmarks AMD has shown you, or let you run yourself?
Don't need to know if it's better or not then Intel, just tell us if it's running anything at all???

What about a tentative time table on when to expect them?? Im about a month or 2 off of my major system upgrade......or are these much farther off yet?

You, know it's really simplistic to keep saying that gaming is GPU bound. Sure if you're like you guys and are running at 2560x1600, than yeah, it's going to be GPU bound. But if you're like us normal folk and are running at 1680x1050 or 1280x1024, and you're running, say, Oblivion, you may very well be CPU bound depending on the CPU and Video card you have.

No wonder it isn't coming out till late 07 or early 08, they keep giving the wafers to people.

We still run a lot of 16x12 numbers. Anyway, since you seem to know much more than I do on the subject, I will say here and now: Prove it to me in real gameplay. And if you can't then stop talking about something you only have theories about. Or you can just throw up some 800x600 DOOM 3 numbers like Intel and proclaim yourself the king of the hill. ;)

I think Penryn is prettier. :)

My real question is will this be AMD's last punch? I mean when Intel finally gets around to moving the mem to the die they'll have the R&D, marketing power, and production power to crush AMD. Can AMD keep fighting if Intel can finally counter or copy the engineering? And now they battle another front with Nvidia and GPU's.

I'm sure that Barcelona will be significantly more competitive clock per clock compared to Conroe, but Penryn opens up another problem. If the 65nm process matures and AMD has resolved some of the previous clock-bottlenecking portions of their design, perhaps we'll see the new A64s start cranking up the Mhz to match Penryn. Perhaps that would allow them to continue until their next revision or entirely new architecture arrives.

Wasn't there something I was reading about Intel considering a hypertransport-like bus for their future architectures?

AMD needs to get those chips to the market. Any idea when we can expect them?

Barcelona later this year with desktop following. But sadly I think later Q4 for desktop.

I think 2008 will be a great year for AMD. They are far from out of the game, but 2007 is going to be one they remember for a LONG time.

It depends if AMD ships a Voodoo Volts adapter in the box or not. ;)

The question of AMD's survival isn't just what they ship this year. In Q2 it's very likely AMD will be pushed back down to the single digits for market share. iSuppli estimates AMD dropped to 11% in Q1. The lack of sales, planned cost cutting and ongoing price war are putting the squeeze on AMD with long term consequences.

K10 is already in the final stages and it shouldn't suffer. But what about in 15 months when Intel launches their next generation cores? AMD will be in the same position again with a much longer development cycle ahead. It's very possible in the next few years that AMD first goes fabless and then becomes another notch in VIA's belt.

Dont mean to offend anyone.

but .... this thread feels like a fetish porn club. Sexual wafer fetishes.

I think of it as a Starcraft move. You can either expand early and take that risk of being overrun while you're defenseless, but if you can pull it off, you'll have yourself an economic superpower in the end, and a major production step ahead of your enemy. This is just what it feels like ATI is doing: They purchased ATI, they're quadrupling their CPU production, and they're trying to manage two gargantuan product launches at the same time.

Games aside, there is certainly a LOT of risk involved in what they are doing, but I think they'll pull it off. Their new graphics cards lineup looks to be very solid, and Barcelona looks to be a monster of its own kind. I'm not worried about their new x2000 series making a splash, as ATI has always sold a strong, highly competitive product lineup. But I am worried about Barcelona. I think Barcelona will be more advanced and faster clock-per-clock than Penryrn, but Penryrn will have clockspeed to its advantage. What it really boils down to is who is faster.

Edit - AMD is the Protoss and Intel is the Zerg!!!!11

So what you're saying is that AMD is constructing additional pylons while intel is massing the hydralisks, but intel will soon need more overlords to continue while AMD will have a decent pylon surplus?
:D

This is exactly the reason I decided to stay with my 939 platform and overclock the X2 4600+ to its limit. Seems like Iam skipping Conroe all together and hop on the quad core wagon when the time comes.

ps. Kyle, nice moustache style you got there. Not quite as George Michael as I like it but pretty deacent still :p :D And more to the point, the wafer looks purdy too ;)

That is exactly why we showed the numbers the way we did at the Conroe launch even though we had to face every pissed off Intel fan for months after that. Too many have been brain washed, especially in the gaming end of things, with canned benchmarks for years now. Had my system not needed a total software reload and a few other things done to it hardware-wise, I would have likely skipped Conroe to and stuck with my 4800+. But the Conroe system has kicked ass, been super stable and was an easy OCer, which was fun. I need to build more ofter probably.

So you like that 'stache eh? Tell you old lady I give free rides on Fridays at happy hour!

Yea, I know AMD has always seemed to be under the gun and cash strapped as compared to Intel. But, I think my fear, to some degree, is that I've never seen Intel go with such gusto as before now. They seem like they're very serious this time about really hurting AMD. That's why the last punch post.

However, I did actually decide on a 6000+ after the price drops. I really wanted to do an AMD this time, and I finally did. :)

Man. If that weren't *YOU* holding that wafer, I'd have called bullshit on that one.

Though it does not bode well. They put a 300mm wafer with over 400 die on it in your hands in room air  Nah. Maybe one of their machines burped and killed a wafer or two. I'm sure it's fine.

Will you do the same kind of benchmarks when Barcelona arrives? Did you give some free rides to the AMD guys to get that picture?

LMFAO!:D Cleans off the Coke-a-cola from the keyboard. Where's the :LROTF: when you need it.
