5 GHz timeout when joining wifi

i thought this problem was resolved with mavericks?
i just enabled my 5 ghz SSID, tried joining and BAM! "your connection has timed out"

running 2011 17" MBP, mavericks, fully updated

Might be a router problem. I dont have this issue with my MBPr and Airport Extreme (both 2013 models)

I've got no issues with 5ghz. Been running Mavericks since the day it was released. Running a Netgear WNDR 4500 N900 router.

I imagine this goes without saying but thought I would mention it, how far are you from the access point? 5Ghz has a smaller range than 2.4Ghz but unless you're a decent distance you should still get coverage. If you can connect for any length of time you can hit option and click the wifi symbol in the bar to see the signal information.
