A friend is looking to run an external monitor on her new laptop.

Lenovo t440 which is HD+ 1600*900 14"

She has $500 for monitor which should provide some options. She's not wealthy, so if there's a $300 or so option that meets her needs I'd like to recommend that.

I think her desk might only have room for a 24" monitor. She does think she has room for dual monitors (nor am I sure what her laptop can drive).

I do not know what resolution her integrated graphics card (Intel 4400) can drive.

She will be doing photo editing and general office work on it.

I think a 24" monitor might work well.

I'm sorry if this forum does not make this kind of recommendation or if I am in the wrong forum. I didn't see a display FAQ.

Any help appreciated.

Dell U2414H, about $250, would be perfect for office work and photo editing.

Review here:

They are really nice screens, and the Intel 4400 will have no problem with a 1080p display.

Alternately, the BenQ 2411PT is 1920x1200, so a little extra vertical real estate, and is also well liked.

You'd want to use DisplayPort and HDMI, as the U2414H doesn't have DVI inputs on it. But for office work and photo editing, it will be plenty capable. We have some systems at work which use the HD 4400/4600 and power two external displays + the laptop's built in screen, and they're just fine.

I wouldn't recommend it for gaming at 1080p (720p, sure!), but Intel's graphics are much better than a lot of people expect these days.

Could that Intel card drive

My research (such as it is) leads me to believe that it could.

Maximum DisplayPort Resolution 3840x2160

o while companies like AMD and NVIDIA like to say that their DisplayPorts support resolution up to 4096x2160, the actual resolution that you can currently achieve on a single display is 2560x1600 @ 60Hz.

yes, it can do 2560x1440. You could do a pair of 2560x1440 screens off of it if you had the output.

Again, I wouldn't recommend trying to use HD 4400 for gaming at that resolution, but it will work just fine for office work and photo editing type stuff.
