The Rig:
Abit IC7-G MaxII, P4 2.4GHz HT @ 2.6GHz, 1 GB Dual Channe; Mushkin PC3500, eVGA NVidia 5700Ultra.

Stock was 305/900, which got me 13209 Marks in 3DMark01. Using NVidia Hardpage I safely bumped it to 400/990 and ran 3DMark 01. I got 12883. So I bumped it down to 350/940 and got 12289.

At stock in 3dMark03 I got around 3400 Marks. w/ 400-990 I got 3665, and at 350/940 I got 3852.

So what the hell is going on? I was under the impression that if I OC, it will gain performance. Hmm interesting..Anyone care to enlighten the GPU OCing newb?

Well depends on the gpu you get but generally if you overclock too much your performance decreases due to increased heat.

You really dont need to QUOTE the first post, and for that matter which is above yours.

No I was clocking in 3d. Hmm I checked the heat and it was 1*C above normal clock speed temp.

lol.. I thought I was the only one that noticed these types of things :)

It might be thermal throttling under load at some point in the benchmark.

Note that your idle temps don't tell you much about your temps under full load. 1C hotter at idle might mean 10C hotter under load.

Run a 3D app in a window (like rthdribl), crank up the settings, and see how hot your card gets while it is running.

Ill handle this today...Hey Simple my gf's seen your pic..they want u now..so ill work on your problem and u work on there problem

I could not find any info about thermal throttling (Document wise) but my card does have a 'Core Slowdown Threshold' in the advanced menu. Its locked at 129*C which is pretty damn hot.

I used the NVidia HardPage 'Detect Optimal Frequencies' and it set me at 533/1.02GHZ! Thats crazy! So I ran 3dMark03 and got 4157 Marks this time but got a little bit of weird lighting and highest temp was 67*C.

Ran 05 and got 823 Marks. Which is an improvement, but temps went to 71*C!

Advice guys?

Thermal throttling is a built-in hardware protection routine that slows down ur GPU when it gets too hot. It is known to kick in before the driver-set threshold for a poor oc'ers. Get rivatuner and run 3dmark or rthdrbl thingy while loggin the core speed in rivatuner - it'll confirm whether ur gpu is throttling or not

UPDATE::::::: I Just got off the phone with NotSoSimple..His problem is now fixed

The Rig:
Abit IC7-G Max II, P4 2.4GHz HT @ 3.0GHz 250fsb , 1 GB Dual Channel Mushkin PC3500, eVGA 5700Ultra

His problem is now gone..i got him to 3ghz on his cpu, Hes getting my 9600xt vid card, and my 3.2e and p4c800e-delux mobo..(im moving to lga 775 soo anyways :) ) so he gets my stuff and ill take his stuff and make server out of it!
