While watching a DVD on my PC via DVI with WinDVD 7 the info button displayed that the movie (Fast and Furious) was being played back a 720 x 480, why is this? I thought that the resolution would be that of 480p, 720p or 1080p. Am I missing something here ?

720 x 480 = 480p = DVD

1280 x 720 = 720p = HD

1920 x 1080 = 1080p = HD

As you can see the DVD has much lower resolution than HD.

But are there not DVDs that support 720p and up ? Can I run at a higer resolution?

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is there are HD DVDs but you need a special HD DVD player (very expensive right now) and an HDCP compliant monitor and video card.

720x480 is the maximum resolution for NTSC video on DVD.
There are DVD players with HDMI connections that can upscale resolution to 720p or 1080i when connected to a HDTV set but you will never get HD quality out of DVD video.

Since you are using a 2407 WFP monitor, I assume your Windows desktop is running at 1920x1200 resolution. If that is true, software DVD players should simply upscale video to 1920x1200 (with two black bars on the top and bottom of the screen) or whatever the desktop resolution is.
