7600GS or X1600Pro

I've only used ATI cards in the past, but I was wondering if the jump to nVidia is worth it.
I won't be doing much hardcore gaming as of now, but plan to once Vista comes out.
Funds are extremely limited, so I can't spend much.

I have decided to get either of these:
7600GS
or
X1600Pro

If it matters, my mobo has 4x but no 8x, but I'm going to get 8x very soon.

Thanks.

have to agree, you might wanna consider some X800 or X850 products aswell

I was faced with the same decision two weeks ago. I wanted the 7600GS but the store I was using sold out so I bought the PCI-E version of the X1600Pro instead at roughly $20 less. Everything I have read ranks the 7600GS higher, but not usually by much. Here in the UK I paid the equivalent of US$120 but I believe they can be had for under $100 in the States. Considering the price it is a lot of card for the money. 4209 in 3dmark05 places it in between an X700 and X800. Good for the money.

I should have added that I have the 256mb version as opposed to the 512mb version that you are considering. I read that there is little difference in performance and that the $40 premium was not worth it.

X1600's are definetly far from being jokes, the 7600GS is faster then the X1600pro, both are good OC'ers, and are good enthusiast cards, cheap, plays all the games out there with medium settings

Generally the X1600pro is going to be cheaper then the 7600GS, also i think the 7600GS draws less power, but since these things are low end with out an internal connector i'm sure its not that big of a deal

i'd lean for the 7600GS right now, if you'd go with the X1600pro i'd doubt you would notice the difference.

The difference between 4x and 8x isn't really noticible.

I have tried both modes on my card (6800gs AGP unlocked and OC'D) and there was only a 8 point difference in 3DMARK05.

I would recommand you to get a x850 or 6800gs. But i stress, that you should not get a new MOBO just for 8X.

Don't worry.
I'm not getting the new board for 8x, but because I just got a free CPU (Pentium 4 3.06) and want to use it. (Got an Athlon XP 1900+ now)

Is that Pentium 4 a northwood? Look for socket 478 pci-express board...

Proof? Links? SOMETHING other than your fan boyish opinion?
I just installed 3 x1600pros and they ran very nicely on bf2 at high settings @ native res.

The x1600 gives you Avivo as well, and while it is not completely perfect yet, it looks very promising.

My friend has a 7600, and he can play F.E.A.R. with max settings with it, but he runs it at a pretty low resolution, only 1024x768.

How is it a joke? I've never seen better image quality playing 720p/1080i content and it's not like it performs like intel extreme graphics in games.

You can't play games if you don't plunk down at least $300! Duh!

Exactly who told you that? Your local PC retailer.

I bet he waved and laughed when you left the shop as well. There is one born every minute.

I'm sorry, I can't convey sarcasm through the internet as well as others. Would you prefer if I added a smiley or two to help you along? :D

i hate to say this but you are wrong ..... you dont need to play games @ 1280 x 1024 or higher . the x1600 pro card does a outstanding job playing games @ 1024x768 . and its highly overclockable by the use of voltage mods . i know i had a x1600pro agp and i volt modded it from 1.35 volts to 1.74 on air cooling reached 732 core and 504 mem never gotten bove 55c full load ..... if it were me i go with the x1600Pro it is a cheaper solution but has a lot more potential in the overclocking world .... bu remember get a Good aftermarket cooler the stock ones SUCK .......

The X850 Pro is truly a great value at $119, I paid $139 last week, I paid another $27 for a Arctic Cooling Silencer 5 rev 2 cooler. I think this is my last agp card and I think it performs as well as my XFX 6800GS (The fast one) PCI-E card

I have it flashed to X850XT PE speed, but am unable to unlock the last 4 pipes. Who cares, I'm happy.

The 7600gs is not a shit card.... I recently built a new computer for my fiance and she's still using a 15" LCD... Currrently she's playing Black and White 2 at full settings at 1024x768. When she gets my 19" LCD she'll probably have turn some settings down, but its not a "joke" for being $100....

Why would you throw your PC out a window? I'd gladly take it off your hands!

You reccomended him PCI-EXPRESS cards, and if you had read the thread, you would see that he wanted AGP.

Wrong-o. With my 7600GS purchased for $115.00 including shipping I've been more than pleased with the performance of the card.

In fact, without adding any third-party cooling upgrades, I'm comfortably overclocking the card with little increase in heat.

The result? 2651 in 3dMark06 at the default benchmark settings (yes that is at 1280x1024 resolution). That is for a low-to-midrange card a very acceptable result in my book. I've also enjoyed great FPS results in all my games, including HL2: Episode one with all the details on and at high settings.

Troll on..

my bad... didnt read the op post hohoho forgive me

who says 7600gs is the best agp???? yeahhh right!! its shhiiit! if u already have x700 u can forget about upgrading to 7600gs or x1600pro! the best AGP card would be yesterdays high end cards... like x800s or 6800s but would reccomend x850xtPE!

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

EDIT = ok i finally actually read the op post.... he says he gonna wait for dirctx10..... now for the time being he wants a budget card while waiting for directx10....... y not jus wait for it? and dont waste ur money on shhhiiit card? itll be jus couple of month from now....

if u still want a budget card for the time being... i still reccomend x850xtPE.....when u get ur directx10 u can lend ur x850xtPE to ur grandson etc... they can still play every game on MAX setting! so if u gonna get 7600gs/x1600pro... late ron when u dont need it.... what u gonna do to it?? sell it? ull get a cheap price... give it to ur grandson? he cant play most game on max settings....

Your sarcasm meter is jammed.

Back to the poin!t the $119 X850 Pro AGP at ATI's Clearance center can easily run at X850XT PE speed, it will just have 12 pipes instead of 16 and is within $10 of the original budget

black and white 2 at full setting? do u mean max setting by that? i played black and white 2 with my x700pro and its far from a decent performance... chunky... choppy..... even in med settings.... and bearly bearly super low settings! theres no way i can play black and white with x700pro

heres a comparison of 7600gs and x700pro there not to0 far off from each other.... and i dont think i can believe u that u can play black and white 2 with ur 7600gs on max settings.....

if u admit that u lied.... i would like to say this

"why lie jus to kick it?"

edit = 7600gs is a joke!!!! reall joke!!!!
