7900gs Vs 8600

Hi,

Just sold the system in my sig last week and am building again. 8800 is not an option at all at the moment. i was wondering if i should get a 8600 or a 7900gs again. i will be overclocking.

You should get either 8800GTS or x1950PRO - it depends on how much money you can spend on GPU ;)
 
Wow Rebel, you have totally managed to not help him out at all. Even after he specifically stated that an 8800series could was not an option. Like, learn to read bud. Once you've done that, learn to help people.

Well, I would say, go with a 8600 for dx10. But 7900gs will probably be better performance wise. So, if you don't want a low budget dx10 card, get the 7900gs
 
Ditto for the 7900GS. yes, you will not be able to run DX10, but 1: There is not a bundle of games that support as of this time 2: You can always save up and upgrade 3: You will have more performance with the 7900 vs the 8600.

8600GTS @ 675/2000 is no faster than 7900GS @ 450/1320

What games are currenly playing? Games that use a lot a shaders (Oblivion, STALKER, etc.) will play better on the 8600GT and 8600GTS. They overclock nice.

X1950 Pro is the best deal right now if you need something fast and cheap. I wouldn't bother with the 7900GS unless you prefer NVIDIA cards or can get it cheaper.
 
Definitely 7900gs, but if you can dig around about and find an x1950pro for around the same price, its definitely a faster card.

Ill make it interesting for yah......I have 8600GTS i play x64bit and x32bit games in DX9 with no problems If you arn't going to use 1280x1024 or higher ....get the 8600GTS over the 7900GS and evenX1900....This is Due to the new Shader Technology and the Faster Memory and the Faster GPU==Smooth Gameplay and way better Eycandy... DESPITE WHAT PEOPLE Say On THe BEnCHmArKs..and thier comments about 128bit verse 256bit.....I had 7950 the 8600GTS just looked way better and was smoother at The RESOLUTION i Play at with all eyeCandy On .1024x768 and 1280x1024 widescreen 21"Lcd

7950 512mb Ko will handle more than the 7900GS or the X1900 ,But you wont have( DX10 )and the 8600GTS handles x64xp pro better when playing X64bit games which use High textures and Shading .Just something to think about in WHICH i havnt seen any cards BENCHED in X64bitXPpro ..64bit is the future of Os's so i wanted a card that was good in 32bit but would handle 64bit better ..With these Cards and from what ive seen after using a 7950 and 8600Gts side by side the picture Quality is far better allthough some games have Lower FPS and some Have Higher ...Its Something you will need to see for your self

So, what you're saying (with seemingly random capitalization) is that despite test after test showing that even a 7900gs is on par with, or slightly faster than an 8600gts, everyone is wrong and it is in fact faster than a 7950gt? I don't buy it!
 
Hahahahaa go buy XPx64bit load TomraiderLegends with all new Generation Content with wide Screen and ALL eycandy and watch the 7950 lag..Matter of fact Then see how awful its lighting and shading is as well...When the8600GTS is just way more visual looking ......Its Just like the 8800 owners who though thier cards were fast and looked good with bad drivers now thier Wicked fast with Way better visuals as well...better drivers ....And you can Visually see between the 7950 and Way better Shader tech of the 8600GTS ..Like i said FPS at 1024X768 is almost same or even better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!So dont believe benches all the time and the 8600GTS dosnt BSOD with Thread stuck in driver Erros cuz of new drivers LOLOLLllolloll

By the way READ resolution and i said for Higher resolution to get 7950 or 8800 didnt I ...yes the 7900Gs is sad compared too it!

I would say go with the 7900gs because its quite a bit cheaper. If they were the same price then I would say get the 8600GTS due to the possibility of it running games made with DX10 in mind. Im not sold on the8600gts doing to do well with a bunch of DX10 effects anyway so that may be a moot point.

AMD should be able to drive down the prices of the GTS 320 in the next month with thier new parts, but the waiting game can be annoying.
 
Yes 7900gs is faster with Dx9 then 8600gt. But with games coming in Dx10 by patch, you may want to get the 8600gt, compagny of heroes the 7 may. I bet couples of other games will have a patch for DX10 content too and i bet that the DX10 will be faster on the 8600gt then it was on the DX(9. Go with the 8600GT or GTS dont waste your money on older product to save what max 10 fps.
 
Another thing to consider that Brent has tried to point out since his review is that all these standard game benchmarks replay stock scenes without any impact from AI, physics interactions, and other real-world system loads. Without the whole picture, the stock benchmarks are basically only testing raw fillrate and bandwidth, which we already know favors the other cards just by looking at the specs of the card. It isn't telling us what we really need to know, which is how the cards will react in actual gameplay situations.

That's why [H] doesn't do all those pretty bar graphs any more, and why gotvoltage's hands-on experience is different from what you expect. Food for thought.

If you want a personal example of how the bar-graph game can bite you in the butt, here's mine: I was building my first real gaming system a few years ago, looking for maximum bang/buck. I got a 9500Pro, but I had nothing but trouble. I was too noobish then to realize that I just had a bad card and needed to RMA, so I fiddled with PSUs and extra case fans etc. until I was fed up and wanted it to "just work." I saw the BFG GeForce 5600 at BestBuy, and the [H] review (back in the bar-graph days) said it was okay. I bought it, and it worked. All the nasty artifacts and crashes went away. It performed well in the older games I was trying to run better at the time. I liked the VIVO features. But, it had absolutely no long-term viability. Every new game made it curl up into a ball and cry. Since [H] changed their testing methodology, I have never been (relatively) burned like that again. Take heed.

The only problem with their way of testing is that it requires a person to be using similar hardware--not just the video card. The CPU, sound card, RAM and motherboard also plays a role in the gaming performance. While it may only make a slight difference in gameplay, you certainly can't rule them out because it WOULD affect the experience if someone was using an older CPU and motherboard. A sound card that uses a lot of CPU cycles may also hurt the performance.

What Brent experiences with the setup he's using may be a totally difference experience for someone else using an identical video card but older or cheaper hardware. I think it would be foolish to assume it would be an identical or even close gameplay experience unless the hardware was roughly the same and the OS, settings, etc., was tweaked the same. But, I kind of see why they are going with this method of testing.

Canned benchmarks aren't the best way to measure the gameplay, but it gives you a good idea of what to look for in raw performance and what to expect out of the video card. But the same rule would apply as you would need a similar config of that of the tester to get nearly identical scores.
 
I play mainly fps's and oblivion.

so the 8600gt is the way to go?

am looking at an xfx 600gpu/1600mem

will this be a wise choice do you think?

7600gt and 8600gt are almost identical in memory bandwidth and clock speeds. the 8600gt, however has more shaders, so it will give additional performance in newer shader intensive games

What needs to be considered is what was mentioned before. While the canned benches show the 8600GTS lacking in performance the people that have actually bought and used them are saying exactly the opposite. Hell i was reading a post by a guy who swapped out a 7950GT for an 8600GTS and he says its faster than the 7950GT hard to believe but when the actual owners of these cards are all saying the same thing pretty hard to ignore.

IMO the benches currently run are nothing more than complex videos that dont change and while they may give a general idea of raw performance on one architecture when a new one is introduced it may not be accurately represented. Its when actual dynamic gameplay becomes involved that the scales get tipped in the opposite direction showing the new architecture in a very different light.
 
I need a card to last me a couple of years, so I will believe an actual owners word a lot more than the outdated DX9 tests right now. In 6 months from now I bet that this forum will be bad mouthing any non-DX10 card to the dinosaur realm. It will be interesting to see the changes in attitude here when the DX10 benchmarks come out.
 
All I know is that I just got a 8600GT and it runs just fine, at 1280x1024, 4x AA, all eye candy on.

If I turn the texture size to max, things get choppy, though. I don't think you can run really high res. on this card, nor can you run with everything totally maxed, but for a $120 card, it's pretty good.
 
1. EOS30D please don't steal bandwidth - the mods will come get you for it.
2. I don't know what language gotvoltage is speaking but if someone could write a reverse AOL translator I'd appreciate it.
3. I would purchase an 8600GTS if you are not planning to upgrade in the next 2-3 years for DX10 support. If you are planning to upgrade within 2 years, then purchase a 7900GS.
 
X1900GT for 129$ at newegg. O/C it to X1950 Pro speeds, or an X1950XT for 160$. Those are the only two cards I recomend. 8800GTS 320 MB would be the best buy. But I know you said you can't stretch your budget that far. IMO I would try though.
