I'm planning to buy a new video card. What would give me better gaming performance, a Geforce 9600GT 512MB or an ATI HD3850 512MB + 780G (mobo IGP) in hybrid crossfire?

From Tomshardware, I found this statement:
When the integrated HD3200 graphics unit is paired with a dedicated Radeon HD3450 to create a Crossfire configuration, graphics performance improved by an average of 65% across the benchmarks. Every single game in our test suite showed gains, ranging from 55% to 87%.

However, I'm not sure if the gains will be that significant on the more powerful HD3850. The 9600GT is faster than the HD3850 to begin with, I think, but I'm not sure if the 780G in hybrid crossfire would propel it ahead of the 9600GT or not.

I think the performance boost would be significant with Hybrid crossfire as the physics is offloaded to the HD3200 IGP leaving the Hd3850 only to deal with rendering if I'm correct.

I'll let you know soon as I already got my Biostar TA780G, LE-1600 and 2gb DDRII 800 up and running. ATM I'm looking for an HD3850 ( as I sold my last one ) then I'ma find out what the diffy is between the Hd3850 alone and the HD3850 with the HD3200 IGP :)

Hybrid crossfire, if you could enable it, would hold the 3850 back since its more than twice as fast as the IGP (probably 5x or 6x faster). Past being about 70% faster there would be no benefit.

The answer was already given. Hybrid Crossfire only works with HD 3450 cards. You can't use a HD 3850.
So your choice is pretty much between the HD 3850 and the 9600 GT and the 9600 GT is definitely the better card.
