9800pro vs 6600gt

These two cards are about the same price tag. Which one will perform better? My brother has the same rig as me with a 9800pro and I am about to upgrade my videocard. I know the 9800pro is a favorite but the thing I don't like about it is that it is old. The specs are AMD 64 3200+, 512 corsair xms, asus a8v (agp board). Will be adding another stick of ram soon.
 
The 6600 GT is a tad better than the 9800 and is newer technology. I would go with that.


Next time try a search I'im pretty sure there are several threads on this subject.
 
pffft...the 6600gt owns the 9800pro in everyway....up to 35% performance boost...
9800pro=128 ddr ram
6600gt=128ddr3 ram
 
Is the 6800 non gt worth the extra $50 over the 6600gt out of the box? Not considering overclocking.
 
My PNY 6800 from compusa for 200$ unlocked perfect and overclocks well. This card is great. If you can, I'd say go for the 6800NU and unlock it to 16/6.

you won't. it only happened twice. once the day after thanksgiving, and a second time a couple weeks after.
 
In my quote I was talking about the 6800 and your link was to the 6600gt. What is the cheapest on a 6800, I have seen $250.

Logic says yes, but I dont think anyone can give you a definate answer. You are gunna have to find some benchmarks comparing the two cards....
 
Now the bfg 6800oc is out of stock at outpost and newegg. I called outpost and they said they were waiting for information from the manufacturer.

i okay it with full setting on my asus 6600gt and it runs flawless...i mean it plays all the games at full settings flawless
 
I am leaning torwards the 6800nu and unlocking/overclocking. The nice thing about the 6800gt that I won't be able to get is the 256 of gddr3 ram. I am not wanting to upgrade for quite a few years and am worried that 128 ram won't be enough for future games. I am a newb so maybe someone could tell me if this is true.
 
PCIe 6600GT's can be had for about $180 at Newegg. AGP versions for about $220. Better then the 9800 Pro by a hefty margin all around in my opinion, and if you are going to spend the money just get the GT.

If people want to compare memory speeds, they should take into account the 9800 pro has a 256 bus.
But the 6600GT still is faster in most games.
But comparing memory running at .9 ghz on a 128bit bus vs memory running at 680 mhz on a 256 bus is stupid.
The 9800 pro has 21.8GB/s of bandwidth vs 14.4 for the 6600GT(standard nvidia ref. speed).
The important part is that the 6600GT runs at 500mhz vs 380 mhz, so it offers much faster shader speed and multitextureing performance.

The thing is...if it was true it would show up in the benchmarks...and it doesn't. Even though the 9800pro has the wonderful memory...it is getting clobbered by the 6600GT's core.
