What kind of PP did you do on that? You've got a lot of dynamic range. I rarely attempt HDR with my D40 since there is now AEB and I don't carry a tripod.

None at all. I was using a circular polarizer, which worked wonders on the sky, but I did not do any touch ups after the fact.

Where's the pictures of the air sharks?

Really nice shots, dude. I'm looking into a 50mm lens but I am taken aback by the lack of Nikkor models with AF-S for my D40x. I suppose I could man up and just .. go manual :)

I am really happy with this lens. I thought the lack of autofocus might be a bother, but its not, at all. I've found I have a pretty easy time focusing it manually. It does work with the focus indicator in the camera, so that little focus dot in the viewfinder will light up when you are properly focused. It's a great little lens, can't beat it for the price.

For a few more shots, check out my flickr. The other shots of GotG are pretty dark, they were taken after the sun went down, but as you can see, I ran into no problems focusing up close.

I'll be playing with it again today, taking some portraits with it, which I hear its good for. I'll report back. Oh, and no air sharks, I need a bit more zoom to capture them ;).

Nikon D40, 50mm f/1.8. (can you tell I like this lens?)

I went skiing with my wife this weekend up in Northern New Mexico since I'm TDY here for the AF. She was driving back doing 85MPH when I took this with my Sony DSC-W55 7.2MP camera. It's set as my desktop now. This is the best one of about 20 I took.

f/2.8
1/80sec exposure
ISO-100
Original is 2048x1536

Seriously? My 50mm 1.8D + D40 combo does not do that. I tried both M and Auto settings.

Here are some shots from me:

One of the eclipse tonight. Not really too happy with how it turned out. It was so cold here couldn't get my hands to manual focus it so i went auto :(

100% crop of the eclipse last night, just as it was beginning.

@darktiger - where is that? Are those HDR? They're nice. :D

The first one is HDR, the second one is not. It is the capital of Texas, in Austin. Nice picture of the eclipse, here in austin it was cloudy to the point where you could not even see the moon/eclipse...

Some HDR shots of the small town I live in. I am not putting these on a photo site because they are copyrighted and I do sell them. This is my own website, feel free to look around. I am sending the link directly to the HDR shots I did downtown because they are some of the best shots I've gotten using this effect.

Excellent HDR look. Very ethereal.

Image created from 27 photos in 3 passes of my workshop. Stitched together with hugin using over 500 control points to make all the connections. You can still see a few distortions (mostly at the fringes of the frame) but this is a rather extreme situation as the camera was on a tripod in the corner of the room so the viewing angles were rather extreme. Still, I'm very happy with the result. No need for a fish-eye lens anymore!!

Any suggestions for what focal length to shoot at, how much to turn the tripod each time and what f-stop to use? :)

I used a Canon PowerShot S5is camera which is what I would consider a good cross between point-and-shoot and DSLR. I was on the AUTO mode so I didn't make any special f-stop or focal length adjustments. The only thing I may have done to adjust the type of photo I took was to turn off the flash as each photo would have had slightly different lighting results. I turned the tripod by hand with no account of measurement. I simply tried to have about a 20% overlap (which I have since learned should have been about 50%). I know there are rigs out there that can actually measure the angle of rotation and tilt but I was home sick for a few days and just decided to wing it. Turns out, the software is pretty forgiving.

hi guys, this is my first attempt at tone mapped... thanx so much the all you guys for the inspiraration...
