A Picture I Took - 2011

I finally got to get outside with my new 70-200mm f/4L IS for a little bit. This was the best of my short walk.

An Epson Perfection V500 Photo because it was the only one I could find locally that had a negative holder for 120 film. I wish I'd gone with the V600 now though, as it can scan two 6x9 frames simultaneously instead of just one and a half.

Thanks! I'm gonna have to get back out there for some more tilt shots. Its a pretty cumbersome process involving setting your framing and focus via a ground-glass focusing screen (think early 1900's Live View), locking your tripod, determining your exposure settings, removing the ground glass, placing the film holder on the "tilted" camera body, removing the protective metal slide, then hoping nothing's changed for when you release the shutter!

Anyway, I finally caught up on scanning my film. Here are some of the highlights, All shot with my Super 23 & 100mm f/3.5 lens :)

I was out practicing low-light photography at ISO 3200 in this shot through a diner window:

In this one I was just wandering around the desert and found this bridge.

I just picked up a Canon T2 and loaded it with some Ilford Delta 100 to dabble with film. We'll see how that turns out in a couple weeks. :)

Summer weather is finally here in the inner West (Well.. It's still snowing like crazy in NorDark). Expect some pics of Wyoming/Montana/SoDak/NorDak sometime in the future..

Got lucky at the second trip to the tulips....

They were posing for someone else, so apologies for the crappy background and blown highlights...

Also today, the inside of a B-25C

I shot one yesterday where someone was posing for someone else as well. ;) No tulips for me, though. =/

I was also trying out my 1.4x extender yesterday.

Looks sharp, what 1.4x teleconverter is that, and what lens is it matched up to?

I just ordered the canon 70-300 IS USM, thinking about getting a tamron 1.4x to test it out with, I know the results wont be ideal, but I'm hoping for the $150 TC they'll be usable once in a while, can't seem to find any shots from the pair though.

It's a Canon 70-200 f2.8 USM IS II mated to a Canon 1.4x II teleconverter hanging off a Canon T2i.

Is the 70-300 compatible with teleconverters?

Ah okay, nice stuff. Thanks!

No, it's not compatible with the Canon TC, the third party TC's are supposed to work although it will probably lose AF at the long end. Like I said, I'm not expecting Canon quality out of a third party solution and a non supported lens, just curious how bad it will be. bobatkins.com did a review of the 75-300 is/usm with the tamron TC, should be pretty similar to that I suppose. I'll just have to ebay one and find out.

Shot with an $11 28mm tokina lens and a $5.50 reverse filter, both from your favorite auction site

Nicely done viper... I only have been there during the daytime... wonder if I can do a photoshoot there at night... Do you know their hours off the top of your head?

It depends on which of the missions you go to. I've been to one that has 9-5 hours posted, and they close the road after those hours. The one I went to last night, no hours were posted, and I had no problems getting to it at night. If you check NPS's website, it lists the hours for the actual Concepcion mission as 9-5, but Concepcion park showed being open until 11pm.... so I'm really not sure which it is.

No idea if the other missions in the area get blocked off at night, I have only been to them during the day.

Here's another random bird outside my apartment building. I've been busy so I haven't gotten to use it for anything real yet, but I'm loving my new 70-200mm f/4L IS.

I also downloaded the trial for Lightroom and it's the closest I've used yet for what I'm looking for when it comes to managing photos and doing basic edits to RAW files. I haven't yet decided if it's worth $300 to me (I don't make any money off of photography) but I'm loving it.

I couldn't think of anywhere to shoot photos, so I hopped into my truck and picked a direction. I found a place in the desert devoid of cactus.

Drove past this on the way back:

I couldn't even catch bees at a beehive! My aperture was too open and the range of focus was always in between bees. Then they noticed me. :(

I've found a good place to practice catching birds in flight is at a park with a lake. Ducks are slow-flying, and you can predict when they're going to take off due to little kids running at them.

Great shot Synapsis!

Thanks aaronearles. For bees at least what works best for me is to almost treat it as a macro with a large magnification. What I mean by that is just set your focus where you want it and just move your head/body instead of trying to refocus. Carpenter bees like the one above zip around then hover for 2-3 seconds, which is your window to move in. That was shot with a 100mm macro (non-usm) from less than a foot away.
