Not really an answer but I threw ubuntu on an old laptop and just shared out my existing samsung laser via airprint, works great. laptop has been running for 300 days straight print from ipads all the time.

I use Printopia and print from my iPhone and iPad without getting an AirPrint enabled printer. You can also print directly to Dropbox with a PDF. Free trial available, $20 for a license. Printopia rocks!

I have an HP Laserjet P1102W. It does the job for me. You have to update the firmware from HPs site to add the functionality but that was easy. I'd recommend it depending on your printing needs.
