So, I have been asked by a friend to take a look at his nonworking computer and after several hours of testing things I have come to the conclusion that the processor must be fried. I have tested each of the 4 sticks of RAM in each slot individually, reset the CMOS, tested the video card, used an old backup PCI vid card, checked the hard drives, and nothing seems to work. The problem with the computer is that, even though it powers on and you can see everything works and gets power, nothing is displayed on the screen, it does not even POST.
I am wanting to go ahead and purchase an OEM or used (whatever I can reliably find) AM2 socket processor, as it has an ASUS m2n32-sli deluxe motherboard in it.
So I guess my first question would be if my conclusion of the problem makes sense to anyone else? And secondly, what might be the best AM2 processor for the money that I might be able to find, or even if anyone had an old one that they might be getting rid of and wanting to sell? I have looked on amazon and ebay, and have found this, an Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.7GHz, for $50 on amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Athlon-2-7GHz-2x512KB-Dual-Core/dp/B001FEDL0G ). And I did also have a question about the socket itself, will an AM2+ processor ( like this, http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Black-Processor-Athlon-Socket/dp/B003LMLB1G ) work in an AM2 board?
Thanks for all the help in advance!
