Hi guys. My boss put together some parts for a PC. But we all saw he opted for a really underpowered 380W PSU.

Here are the core components for his rig. He'll be gaming. He's bought these parts and we just need a good PSU recommend for him that'll match the budget spent so far on everything else. He won't be overclocking.

Motherboard ASUS M4A87TD EVO AM3 AMD 870 SATA USB 3.0 $94

4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Value Select 1.5V $20ish

AMD X4 840 3.2GHZ x 4 95W $105

ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU 675/1350 $165

DVD
SATA HD
Mid Tower Case

What do you recommend? I'm thinking he wants to keep it as budget as possible while still being safe enough to power his setup.

I recommend these PSUs:
$45 - Antec NEO ECO 400C 400W PSU
$58 - Antec NEO ECO 520C 520W PSU
$59 - Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-520 520W PSU

Although your boss did make another bad mistake in choosing the CPU: That CPU isn't a true Phenom II CPU on account of it not having a L3 cache. In addition, a true Phenom II CPU only costs $5 more:

Or $15 more:
$120 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU

Either way, from a price to performance standpoint, that CPU wasn't that good of a buy.

Thanks, Danny Bui. You are a true king when it comes to this stuff. As far as your first PSU suggestion, it is only 400W. I was surprised by this. Do you think he'll be okay with 380W and the Antec EarthWatts Green 380W if he weren't to change it?

The 945 also has a promo code for another $15 off.. so lower by $10 than the x4 840. Good find!

It's a bit too close to comfort. In addition, there's actually a big difference between the 400W PSU and the 380W PSUs:
- The 400W PSU that I recommended has 30A on the +12V rail.
- That 380W PSU has 27A on the +12V rail
- That 3A difference translate to an additional 36W which is just barely clearing my comfort zone for PSU operations.

So it's not a difference of 20W but 36W.

Actually, the EA380D has 28A on the +12V rail. Still, there is a 24W difference between the 400W you recommended and the EA380D.

Ahh crap. I was thinking of the old EA380. Hmm.....
