Doing a "hold me over" upgrade on my old s-478 P4 3.0. Currently has the antec truepower:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817103928

and i also have the cooler master laying around http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171028&Tpk=coolermaster+460

Final build will be GIGABYTE GA-P31-S3G
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
E7200
HD4850
2 7200 RPM SATA drives
1x IDE dvd burner

So which power supply should i use? at first glance i would say the cooler master since it has 18A 12v x2 vs 17A and it has the 6pin plug for vid card but im not sure of the quality of one vs the other ?

The Antec is a deactivated item.

Anyway, the CM unit should be able to handle that system providing it's a decent PSU. You'll be using less than 250W under load, so it shouldn't tax the unit too much.

I think he already has both PSUs on hand.

Anyway, the TPII actually provides more power than the CM PSU since it has 31A on the +12V rail where as the CM PSU only has 26A on the +12V rail. So in terms of power, I'd go with the TPII

However in terms of quality, neither PSUs. The CM 460W PSU is in fact an overrated but semi-decent 430W PSU. The Antec Smartpower and Truepower I and II series were well known for dying under a light heat, load, or time or a combination of the three. However, you can always RMA the TPII PSU if it's still within the 3 year warranty back to Antec and they'll send you a quality PSU in return.

Interesting that you say that, i wonder if thats why the pc wont post sometimes(have to press reset, then it works) I will swap in the CM for now and RMA the antec.

-Thanks Alot

That probably could be a mobo problem. But still RMA the Antec and stick in the CM for now. At the very least, you get a new PSU.
