Ok, so here is the problem I have in front of me I need a good file recovery program for windows. Some one has asked me to fix their computer but the problem is they tried to fix it them selves first in doing so they reformatted and re-installed windows xp. Is there a good program preferably free that would be good for recovering his files.

after doing some searching there is file recovery by pc inspector that is free, any experiences and any suggestion on alternates?

If they've been overwritten by the XP install, their gone.

I've never found a good and free file recovery app... A good and not free app to look at is Spinrite, and GetDataBack works well also.

After installing XP, I wouldn't leave much hope. I've heard Encase is good (but most certainly not free).
