My Dell 2824 is incredibly loud... louder than any other component in my room by far :) Anyone ever modified the fans or even better just killed them entirely? I searched but couldn't find confirmation that anyone had tried.

I replaced the fans with some fans from a older Cisco switch i had laying around. still loud but not as loud as the stock dell fans. One draw back of using the Cisco fans is that there is no RPM sensor that tells the Dell switch that the fans are running which cause the fan failure led to light up. But hey, it works and its a bit quieter.

is it the side blowing fans or the ones in the psu, that are noisy ? are they old and shot ?

It's pretty much brand new. Seems to be the fan at the rear of the unit, if I cover it with my hand the sound goes away. Unfortunately it sits in my home theater closet which is open to the room, and is really annoying. I'll crack it open today and look at the insides.

There's a few options for replacement if that's what you'd like to do.

It could be that the fan is hard anchored to the case of the switch and the fan itself could be unbalanced leading to a nasty hum or resonance.
that could be solved with a fan anti-vibration kit like so:

Do you have access to the wiring, or do they plug straight into a fan slot? If you have access to the wiring, try to rewire so it runs on 5v. I've done this many times to PCs and what not. You get reduced air flow but usually still enough to cool. Obviously not overclocking material though. :p
