I just replaced the stock heat sink on my Athlon X2 4800+ with a Thermalright ultra 90, and I'm assessing whether it's safe to run it without any fan on the heatsink. I have three 120mm case fans, including the PSU fan, and I basically want my PC as quiet as possible.

With the stock heat sink, my CPU idled around 43C, I think. With the Ultra 90 it idles around 50C. I played Gears of War to stress it out a bit, and it goes up to 67C.

My old 3200+ used to routinely go into the high 60's, so is 67C or a big higher ok? What's the maximum safe temperature? I don't play games that often, so is it ok if the PC goes up to 70C for an hour a day or so?

I would stick even a low CFM fan on that. 70C is the max temp for most X2's, so you are at the point where the CPU will throttle. A low CFM fan will be silent, and might bring the temps down enough to be safe. I would def get that CPU to atleast 60 under load.
