Would a stock 7790 be on par with an old 5850? I need a cheap backup card.

Not really, those 5850s were decent cards, you are losing like a 3rd of the stream processors with the 7790.

Even a 7850 is close to a step down.

Wtf r u talking about. Do 10 seconds research before replying to somebody at least.

if you look at reviews 7790 is actually slightly better than 5850. Actually like 10-15% better in most cases and uses nearly half the power and much quieter. 7850 being "close to a step down" is total bs. Actually a large upgrade from 5850. 7790 is even an upgrade.

No they aren't an upgrade, I went from a 5850 to a 7850, sidegrade is what it felt like, and on some older games it felt slower.

I don't need to look up reviews when I have had the cards myself.

Well if it was a 'sidegrade" then that's exactly what the OP wants. He isn't looking for an upgrade.

I've done the 5870 to 7850 swap, and it is most definitely an upgrade in every way. 5850 to 7790 should be a pretty similar scenario.

Yea, did a little digging myself and it seems like 7790 would be pretty damn equivalent. If I can snag a 7850 for about $100, I'll gain a few frames here and there. A sidegrade is exactly what I'm looking for, as this isn't going in my main rig.

Appreciate the feedback.
