I am cleaning out my office and forgot that I had an ATI 9800 and a Chaintech 6300 on the shelf, not being used. I was going to pop one in my secondary "guest gaming" box that I let my broke friends play on. The 6200 is newer and I think it is what I am going with, but wanted some input.

interesting. and for details, it is a plain 9800 and an agp 6200, not one of those turbo cache things. good to hear the 9800 might still have some life to it though.

I wouldn't go that far, a 256 bit 9800pro might, but not for newer games...

If its a 6200 w/128 mem. interface then it might outperform a vanillia 9800 if you could mod it to 6600 (open 4 disabled pipelines). Those unlocked and overclocked 6200's could at least be the 9800pro's equal. The 6200's that could potetially get close to 6600gt speeds were pretty rare though. Most come with 256 MB of slow ram or a 64 bit interface, so the 9800 wins unless that 6200 is 128/128/modable.

I did this with a 6200 I have at work. Unlocked to 6600 and then OC'd it as far as it would go. It is about the same as a 9800 Pro after doing that depending on the game.

I found an eVGA 6200 on newegg for 39.99 with a MIR. I'm currently using a Geforce 3 ti200 and was thinking this would be a fair upgrade till I can afford a new build. Really the only "new" games I play are civ 4, homm5 and dod:s. Curious if this was good for the price and what I play, I'm not interested in buying used or ebay.

eVGA 6200

EDIT* There's also a 256 meg eVGA 6200 for a tad more, Would it be worth the extra price for twice the memory since it only has a 64 bit interface?

x800 = pci X 9800 is what i remember

No, no, no, no, no.

First off, those benchies you posted compared a 6200 with an X600, not an X800.
Second, the PCI-E (which is NOT the same as PCI-X) equivalent to a 9800 is the X700, not the X800.
Third, the 9800 will own a 6200 in any game, no matter what. Even with OCing I'm not seeing such a huge difference closing unless we're talking about one of the 9800SEs here, which we're not.

A 9800pro is better than a plain 6600 but very slightly worse than a 6600GT. You wouldn't expect a 7300GS to be better than an X800XT would you?

yeah my eyes were decieving me it says x600 nto x800

2nd i know the diff between pci x and pci- express but abbreviated in the assumption pci- x is basiclly not even around.

http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q3/radeon-x700xt/index.x?pg=7

same test with a x700xt shows its pretty close to the 6200. u gotta compare this link with the first oen given.

same test different cards used.

http://techreport.com/reviews/2004q3/radeon-x700xt/index.x?pg=8

this is the same game but with eye candy maxed out the 6200 wins.
once again u must look at the first link i gave in the first post and this one to see the results for both cards.

course in about any other game it gets killed but it fights in doom 3 :D

256mb will not help any. i think you will be VERY unhappy with a 6200. i have a 6600 256mb and it is horrible for modern games. i cant even imagine having half the pipes.

Well, yeah, basically what you're seeing there is how optimized for nVidia cards Doom 3 is.

Also, there is something called PCI-X, it's a type of 64-bit slot on certain server motherboards. Hence why there is a PCI-E and a PCI-X which are separate of each other.

I believe i said i knew there was but again its not really considered when talking about the subject.

xpress express i simply got lazy :p

good topic, good to know for people like me who have a 6200 and are happy with it! the best i've owned was a 6600 and played prince of persia? i just play starcraft now...anyone here still play that?

Not anymore, but you're tempting me to dig it out and play it again :).

you would not be happy at all if you played any modern games. a 6200 is just way to weak.

Doesn't matter. A 9500 would own a 6200 any day of the week.

No it wouldn't. Well, my 6200 would beat the shit out of most 9500s. There is a difference with mine, I have mine overclocked quite a bit ;) In fact, mine is overclocked enough to play HL2 on max settings with no AA or AF at 1280.1024 at 25-30 FPS.

Either way, a 9800 PRO would beat the shit out of any 6200. It would be closer with the 9800SE (Shitty Edition), but the PRO and XT are much better cards.

Youre saying that a 6200 wont run BF2 and the like?

That's a dumb statement then, ;).

well for BF2 a 6200 will run around 20 fps with no AA medium quality at 1024x768. now whos statement is dumb.

I can run BF2 on an FX5200 very strongly. Granted, its nothing spectacular, but my FX5200 is by no means weak...

the 6200 will own any FX series card...

even the 5950 has four pixel piplines (back when that meant something) that can push two pixels per cycle when a certain type of shading is used, but otherwise, the 9600pro can pwn the 5900.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

dude, a GF4 can pwn a 5200. Ive got one too (well, i have a PCX5300) and it BLOWS in EVERYTHING.

I can run it at those settings at almost 30FPS.

almost barely playable then. the benchies i looked at said 23 fps for those settings. you have to make the game look ass ugly to get playable framerates with a 6200.

What are the clocks for this benchmark? Also, what are the specs of the PC that they are playing it on? As I said, mine is strongly overclocked.

That's odd, because every game I've thrown at it had played just fine... ;)

are you saying a 5200 can handle everything you have thrown at it??

BlackTigers91 said:
Absolutely, there is NO game I've run that couldn't be played...
either you dont play any modern games or you have lost your mind. the 5200 will barely get above the single digits for games like Far Cry. Quake4 , and BF2. also forget about Fear and Oblivian.

Overclocked NV43 core 6200s rule. ;)

HL2 was playable at 1600x1200 w/ 2xAA/4xAF on one of my old 6200s above.

Would it help if I told you that I don't need eye candy to game?
