Well my system is getting a little aged, and it is time for an upgrade.

currently running:

X2 4800+ @ 3.2ghz (Phase)
DFI NF4 sli expert
1GB OCZ Gold @ 2-2-2-2
2x 7800gtx sli

I really want to hit 4ghz on both cores. So what is the golden CPU/MB/Memory combo these days?

I don't think you can hit 4.0 Ghz on AMD. If you could, you would need insane cooling. Check the O/C forum & see if anyone has done it.

I run about -53'C; with core speeds above 3.0ghz at stock clocks I thouhgt for sure I could hit 4.0ghz, maybe i should look at an intel solution?

It's still pretty hard to hit 4Ghz with an E6600/E6700... but then again, you are running phase cooling, sooooo.... you might not have as much a problem ;)

There are some pretty nice mobo's out there too. If you are looking for SLI take a look at the EVGA 680i mobo. If you only need one video card, check out the Abit QuadGT P965 board or the DFI Infinity P965 board... they will both overclock high and on the 1066 strap, meaning if you get it to 4Ghz on the 1066 strap it'll run faster clock for clock than other boards that automatically switch the strap.

It'd be a fast computer @ 4Ghz :D

fastest amd overclocks too date according too AMD Geeks is in this order
FX-53 @ 4012Mhz Phase, Ultra D
3700+ @ 3821 MHz Phase, Ultra D
4000+ @ 3750 MHz Phase Ultra D
3700+ @ 3667 MHz Phase, Ultra D
X2 4200+ @ 3613 MHz Phase, NF4 Expert

If you're going to get anywhere near 4ghz you'll need an AM2 cpu for sure. And even then, it appears most of the AM2 chips are maxing out around 3.5ghz.

In order to hit 4ghz on a modern CPU (We all know the presslers could hit 4ghz, but even at 4ghz, they were somewhat slow), you will need a core 2 duo. E6600s can hit 4ghz on good cooling

The most "fun" CPUs to OC these days though are the low end AM2 Brisbane 3600 and 3800 on the AMD side and E4300 and E6300 on Intel side. All these chips can hit 3ghz+ for not much money.

I hit 3505ghz ages ago on my OPT 150... can't belive things have not advanced any farther than 3.6-3.8 ghz...

unfortunately, AMD has somewhat sat on their hands all this time, and instead has been working on Barcelona (which better kick major ass or AMD is in trouble)
