I've got $280 to spend, needs to be AGP. I sold my X800XL, I was really bored with it, I want to play with something else. Just don't include Jetway, PNY, or any shit-for-brains brand.

Depends on what resolution you play at.

If you play at 2048x1536 than I would recomend a 7800GTX (this one is obviously for not, I am just trying to make a point)

If you play at 1600x1200 than I would recomend a 6800GT http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130203

If you play at 1280x1024 than I would still recomend a 6800GT

If you play at 1024x768 than I would recomend a 6600GT
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130220

No CPU is going to bottleneck you at the really high resolutions, so you might as well go all out. However, at around 1024x768, your old processor may start to hinder performance and that's why I recomend a slower video card (so that you're not wasting money).

looks like you'll want a 6800gt for $280 if you're tired of an x800xl.

Yeah, which 6800GT?

And how come is my FEAR demo fucked up and I can't get in the front of the car? The car door is actually buggy. Man...

he only listed one geforce card and your graphics look terrible on fear, maybe it was just a corrupted install?

Nope, installed it twice (also re-downloaded from yahoo site) and still the same. It's probably an issue with the FireGL card.

I pretty much agree with you but he could also consider a regular 6800 instead of the 6800GT or the 6600GT

I agree on the 6800gt... it's performance is similar to the xl and you'll have some new things to fiddle with..

There are tons of websites showing that an processor does NOT bottleneck the GPU significantly at playable resolutions.

The best one is here:
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/athlon_64_geforce_7800_gtx_scaling/

Normally these benchmarks you see are at something like 640x480 that have significant differences between processors. If you want to market and sell a processor, it has to look like a big difference, right?

I have one computer wiht the XP 3200+ and I have I have the 6800GT. However, the price to performance king at the moment is the X800XL.

I am playing everthing at max resolution - the biggest difference in gaming was going to >1GB RAM. If you want to keep your XP 3200+ for another year or so (as I do) then X800XL or 6800GT and more than 1G RAM. All settings for HL2, Far Cry, BF2 playable at max for me at 1280x1024 which is rhe resolution of my flat panel.

I am pulling down 5800 on 3Dmark05 with my XP2600 (non barton) oc'd to 2200 and a PNY 6800GT (agp) oc'd to ultra speeds... on an MSI K7N2-L. It plays games very well.. doom3 @ 1600x1200 @ 55fps avg. no AA but oh well... at that res you don't need that really... The 6800GT is a great card... you can get'm used for just over $200 on eBay or in the FS/T section.

Hmm, this thread is VERY interesting to me. I was really wanting to get an A64 PC, but I'm very poor, maybe I can just get an 6800GT in the future, instead of spending $1500 for a new PC.

not totally true.... when I ran my 6800ultra with my athlon XP 3200+ vs my athlon 64 3200+..... in CS:S... let me tell you.. I rather played with the a64 and a geforce 4 ti4200 card then the axp 3200+ and 6800ultra :p

I know, I had a PNY 6800GT before my X800XL. It sucked for overclocking, I got artifacts like crazy when I tried to OC it to 380/1050.

Anyway, what does everyone think of the BFG 6800 OC 128MB?

I wouldn't sink too much cash into AGP at this point. Go with a 6800nu or something inexpensive, then buy a new PC in a year or so, when Socket M2 and DDR2 become the standard.

*cough* that's a little extreme...I would rather play CS:S with my dad's P4 2.0ghz and a 9800pro than with my 3500+ and a gf4

OK.. so I exagerated a bit... :p but it's more like... a64 with a stock 6800gt than a axp with a 6800ultra :p

...I'm getting a BFG 6800 OC. No need to post and discuss in this thread anymore.

That is true about CS:S. It doesn't work video cards very hard, but instead works the CPU/Memory system hard.

I have a 3500+ at stock my friend has a 3200+ at stock I have a 9800 pro he has an x800 pro...his fps are way better than mine.

CS:S does not make good use of resources at all, HL2 makes so much better of resources, it makes me sad.
