Yo, I want to know what the best headphones are for music/movies/gaming. I really want a true 5.1 headphone so I was looking at razer's barracuda http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8260721&st=razer+&type=product&id=1170289630017

(I'll most likely buy from newegg)

I am the kind of person that would like everything really crisp and accurate and decent bass. I was thinking of shooting for a 5.1 logitech speaker system but IDK I think headphones might be a better choice (you can persuade me here). I'll also be using them for my 360 (by making it run an input to my sound card and out into my headphones creating almost accurate and true 5.1).

Do a search on this forum for 5.1 headphones and you'll turn up mixed opinions. The general opinion is that 5.1 headphones are not worth your time/money.

You can get a much better set of headphones for that budget. I have the Audio Technica ATH-a900's so I believe I can vouch for the sound stage capabilities of the A500's which are right in your price range... And wow I just noticed they are only $89 now compared to the $105 they used to be

That's pretty much a steal for headphones that good. If you're looking to splurge a bit I would go for the a900's. I know from experience these perform amazing in gaming/music.

Keep in mind both of the above headphones are closed so it'll muffle out outside noises which is great for gaming, not so great if you have a loved one trying to talk to you :p

Also take a look at the Sennheiser HD555, I believe others have recommended those in the past. Newegg has them for $109.

These are open so they won't drown out noises but should provide a very nice gaming/music experience.

And now for the obligatory link to http://www.headfi.org for all your headphone needs/opinions/wallet breaking.

so 5.1 in headphones are unnecessary? Oh and will any of those require an amp or something?? I'm new to headphones sorta.

edit: I'm so dumb I forgot that I need to have my headset on while I'm on xbl so I wont be using them for my 360. :\ silly me.

5.1 headphones have been considered the snake oil of headphones. You'd have to ask someone who has a set of 5.1 and a set of stereo headphones around the same value to back that up.

The Audio Technicas don't require an amp, that is a nice feature of them. They will sound better with an amp but are easily driven by a sound card or receiver.

ooook short version so pay attention:

5.1 Headphones = only ok to spot the bad guys in a game and maybe give some surround feel to a movie. For music they SUCK. Think of little dry farts.

Same $$ more or less = Sennheiser 485, 555, 595, AudioTechnica A500, A700 Airs or the A900. All of these will give you more detail and clarity than you probably have ever heard. Whole 'nother level for music and movies, games.

no amp needed for the 485s. Just plug em into the soundcard or whatever and go for it!

After asking more or less the same question here....I decided to go with the ATH-A900s from AC.

I can't believe how good these headphones are for gaming. :D

As far as 5.1 surround sound headphones go, I'd recommend the Turtle Beach HPA2.. I think they're pretty good for gaming, detecting where people spawn in Quake 4 is much easier. As far as music goes, they're nice. Not any worse that my old 2.1 headphones (Altec Lansing), but I'd imagine, they're not any better than SENNHEISER... in-between as far as sound quality goes. Bass is really nice for 5.1 headphones.
I'd highly recommend them.
