I currently run a Radeon 9100 PCI card in my other tower. I'm looking for an upgrade, possibly the best PCI video card I can get capable of running HL2 at 1024x768.

I think the GeForce 5700LE is the quickest you can go on PCI. It's not the quickest card ever, I'm afraid.

I've also had a quick look, but couldn't find much on your current card to see how the two compare.

Yeah, I lowered the settings when playing UT2004, the 9200 is decent (game is playable) now in multiplayer.

This is funny, all the people worying about Pci-E and what to do with the Agp 8x cards, then this guy shows up and tells us that Hl2 works on a Pci card. Old school...

If you can find a 5600, that should beat the 5700LE

Yeah, but I haven't seen any 5600 or 5700 (non-LE) PCI cards. A friend of mine is stuck with a Dell with no AGP slot & I've been trying to find him something halfway decent, or at least better than the onboard Intel turd graphics... :(

:D

I bought a PCI 5200 "Plus" (500MHz 128-bit memory) and it played CS:S fine @ 1024x768. I installed it in my nephew's computer before HL2 came out, but I bet it would play. Maybe not at 1024x768, but probably at 800x600. Next time i'm there i'll do some benchmarks with a DVD copy of my steam directory.

My bad. I'd looked on pricewatch recently when asked this question by somebody else and saw this :

It's called a "5600" but it says it has a 5200 in it. My mistake.

I suggest NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra or the ATI Radeon X800 XT...
But they're kinda expensive :p

Neither of those are available with a PCI interface.

CastleBravo,

my suggestion would be to take the money spent on a PCI FX5700 and add another $20 or so and get this Asus barebone and gut that Dell, I'm guessing it's a 2300/2400 series, then get a decent AGP card. The box is a hella nice little system, it uses a standard mATX board and a full size ATX power supply so future upgrades are easy.

It's easy if he has a 2350/2400/3000 (all use the same case internally): just replace the motherboard with a microATX board. It's a lot cheaper that way. I did that here (Asus Athlon motherboard and CPU in Dell case with Dell PSU):

I was even able to use the stock silent exhaust cooling, but needed a Tt Volcano 6+Cu minus the fan to cool the CPU (AXP 2400+).

And before someone says something stupid (not you Mr45), the Dell does use a standard ATX PSU and has standard ATX mounting points. The only small hassle is wiring up the new motherboard. I have the pinout for the front panel connector if the OP needs it.

Not my decision. I've got a friend with one of those PCI-only fukwit Dells, right now he's not up for replacing the mobo. He doesn't really need huge performance, just something noticeably better than the Intel Extreme turd graphics controller.

Of the PCI cards I can actually find, the Inno3D FX 5600 seems to be the best. Not a real well known brand, but it has actaully gotten some good reviews.

Some more info: the retailer selling those Inno3D FX 5600 PCI cards (Amamax) actaully has a decent rating...

Here are a couple reviews of products made by the same manufacturer.

And to clear up the confusion in the ad, here is the manufacturer's specs... the product really is a PCI bus FX 5600.

Hmm the GeForce 6800 ultra is not avaliable in PCI i suppose,
but the ATI X800 XT is.

He is looking for a PCI Vid Card not a new and wonderfully expensive PCI express Vid Card. I Built a Mini ATX For a friend and put a 5200 128mb in it, It was able to run Doom at 800x600. Wasn't the prettiest thing I have ever seen but I did run it at a decent frame rate. 5200 256MB $100

You weren't reading this thread at all were you?
