I want a dedicated, or managed hosting service that's cheap and good (as in secure, with decent hardware and bandwidth), anyone know of any good providers that can do this?

I've looked into peer1 (expensive), but I was wondering if there was anything with similar features for cheaper.

Specificall what are you looking for?

If it is just dedicated web hosting, then Domain.com Dreamhost 1&1 network solutions....etc etc etc would all work just fine for you.

If you want VPS, or even a single server then Rackspace, Liquid Web, The Planet, Dreamhost would probably be where I would go, however these guys can get pricy depending on what you want / need.

no, not if it's going to cost more than what we are pulling in. MINIMIZE business costs :p Like I'm getting quotes within $650+/month

Main question is , email and bandwidth in one sentence raises the question of volume. And based on that the limitation would fist be the server and then bandwidth. most self respecting hosting provider has plenty of bandwidth available for services offered.

That said always read the small print most budget providers have rules about email traffic and such things.

Next sensitive data .....if the data is that sensitive you would not want to host it on non owned hardware that is 100% dependent on 3rd party people for maintenance. Even the most respectable people do not take ownership of the data maintained on their systems. i have worked for the government and banks and all of those host website etc at hosting providers but always own the back-end and in many cases the software on the front end and then have specialists doing security.

All this comes to what are you truelly willing to pay as you can get a basic package for 200 a month but none of the mentioned above will apply.

well is it worth getting a managed server (which costs a ton more), vs just a plain dedicated box. I wanted to ensure that we had a server with linux, php5, and mysql installed and ready to go.

Just look to hosted exchange that offers encryption and HIPAA compliance, most do, I just can't think of any off the top of my head.

The problem you are going to run into is if you want a cloud based server for exchange (or just email in general) you are going to need 500+GB of storage in RAID 1, you are going to need at least double that for backups, you are going to need offsite backup of some kind, you will need 4-8GB of RAM depending on your email infrastructure, you need your software licenses, you are going to need some sort of management console.

I went to liquid web and built out an i5 server that would be able to handle a 30 person exchange environment and it would cost $715 a month + 1x$700 Exchange License + 3x$50 Exchange CALs. So all in all you are looking at $10,780 for your first year, then $8580 after that. If you were to go to a hosted exchange company that sells mailboxes for $15 each then you would pay $450 a month, or $5400 a year. Personally I would go hosted or just buy a server and put it in house instead of going to a hosting company for a single server.

If you go with a dedicated server definately check softlayer.com out. In my opinion they're the best out there. (They recently merged w/ theplanet.com)

If it's very sensitive then in house is the only way to go. Be ready to pay an arm and a leg for a super fast connection though.
