I want to eventually get a receiver and some bookshelf speakers. I would like to know the best USB sound card that I can use for my laptop which is my main computer. I really would like to keep it under $250 is possible.

is this for stereo music only? if so, then I recommend the nuforce uDAC at only $99 (about 105 shipped from amazon)

I've been using it only with the headphone output, but from reviews around the web, it's just as phenomenal with the analog/digital outs.

The headphones I've been using are the denon ad1001, audio technica es7, jvc ha-rx700, jvc ha-m750, nuforce ne6, and altec lansing uhp336 (the rebrand UE superfi 3? I think), and they all sound great out of this uDAC, really great... so much so that I want to get a second unit for use at work.

I'd say check this out:

I don't have this one, but I do have the Micro (the USB key-like version, only supports 3.5mm or SPDIF out with that adapter) version and it works great and sounds excellent with my Shure SCL2s

Edit: Apparently they've now released a Micro II version, with a USB extension built in to it... only a month after I got my Micro I, ugh! Oh well :p

EMU 0404 is good, but there are new kids on the block.

The m2tech hiface is considered THE best USB sound card right now for under $1000, although it has not DAC, so you have to feed its digital output into a receiver. It has internal clocks and bit perfect output.

The Musiland 02 has a DAC + AMP which is nice, and its cheap. Also a internal clock and Bit-Perfect output.

research online more.
