Blizzard Cracking Down On "Inappropriate" Starcraft 2 Maps

If you build it, they will come….Blizzard that is. If you are into Starcraft 2 and create your own maps, better take care as to its shape and content. Blizzard will pull the map at their discretion if it violates their policies, which are not made public. I would imagine that will make it rather hard to comply with the rules when you don’t know the rules.

According to Blizzard community manager Lylirra on the game's official message board:While players are encouraged to share the maps they create through Battle.net, published maps are subject to review to ensure that they promote a fun and safe environment for all players...If a map is found to contain inappropriate content, it will be removed from Battle.net and the map maker will be contacted via email.

There is no problem with this at all, unless you really want to make maps and/or units draw swaztikas or crudely drawn genitalia. They're protecting their shit from people who are shit.

And don't give me that buddhist sign of peace bullsh, or how it's your game because you bought it with your money. It's not. It's their game, you have a license to use it as long as you read the rules and follow them.

Damnit I really wanted to make that doom map...

Actually if you go to east asia it's used on maps as the symbol for a temple. So if you were making a map based on a tokyo map it would have to be there! Genitals are never good though, it disturbs me when people draw penuses in that way...I worry for their anatomy...

Good luck modding. Heck, good luck simply making a kick-ass Starship Troopers map; it'll just be pulled anyway.

Hopefully Blizzard won't become as ban-happy as Apple is with their app store. However, I can see it happening anyway since they have 100% control over the multiplayer aspect of their game now that everything is done through Battle.net. Granted, game maps and phone apps are different, but decisions based on "inappropriate content" sometimes results in lame-ass decisions that make a company look like it's on a power trip.
 
i still remember the pleasure kerrigan maps and the ones that made the minimap look like a scene from some gay porn
 
If you read the entire article, you'll find this is probably not about phallic shaped maps:

"Cyrileo apparently heard back from Blizzard, and believes the map was removed because the pathing in it could result in a racially insensitive symbol being displayed."
 
phew, for a second there I thought Blizzard was going to pull the Kerrigan nudie maps.

I remember joining games in WC3 with misleading titles. The name said one thing and once in the game room, porn or some sort would pop up.
 
They don't want "hate speech" in the maps. Are the people who work at Blizzard from Canada?
 
This is a complete joke... if its fun.. people will play it.. if it sucks... they wont...stop jumping on the media bandwagon about appropriate and inappropriate... its each persons right to decide.. dont like it... delete the map and dont play it... thats the choice each of us have... just like each of us has the right to believe whatever the fuck we want too...

Come back when you understand that free speech and expression isnt there for only popular concepts.. its there for unpopular ones... comment about it.. say you dont like it... and dont play it...but stop being ignorant about it saying it should be banned... understand just what you are doing with your free expression by oppressing someone elses...

With that said.. i dont care if its a map of a care bear.. a penis.. a swastika.. or two tit shaped mounds getting plowed by a volcano... if its fun.. i will play it.. if not.. i wont...

Blizzard owns and operates Bnet. There is not a free speech issue. Never will be.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiittt....I'm talking downloading patches from BBS's to make all the wall textures in Doom of naked ladies and shoot boobies from my guns!

I think the only custom map I ever played on old Starcraft was $$$BIG GAME HUNTERS$$$ so I guess this is the new thing :)
 
But anyways, ya good on Blizz. They have a large extended family, and they treat us pretty good all things considered.
 
The map in reference doesn't even have anything that explicitly displays any type of crude humor or hate. They're whining about the minimap and how in the lower left corner of it the units make half a swastika. oh boo hoo

Actually, for the record, the half swastika that is created in each corner of the map is a symbol of luck and good prosperity. The one that everyone likes to bitch about is the swastika that Hitler used, which has the arms facing the opposite way. That one is what Hitler adopted for his army, and by swapping the arm direction he made it his own while still being able to show what he wanted, which was essentially good fortune. Shame that it only has negative connotations to this day, when in reality it's something good thanks to Bhuddism.

Plus this. Swastika's definition is focused on well-being. Another case of a subject becoming taboo and breeding ignorance. Making things taboo doesn't help anyone.

I dunno about that... they did give you the right to create a map of your own with the map tools... how can it not be? But yes, you are correct...corporations/entities/employers.. have the right to over rule the constitution... its censorship... but it is their right... i just dont understand the problem really... if its a great map... people play it.. if it isnt.. they dont...

But i understand what you mean... i kinda went off the deep end back there anyway...LOL... just pisses me off to no end that people are so completely ignorant and think that racism of any kind shouldnt be tolerated... its no different than religion.. its just a belief...it has to be accepted that people believe in that crap...not embraced if you dont like it.. but accepted...
 
The map could also be considered to have an Iron Cross type of look to it as well...just from the middle 4 blocks...but even that isnt racist in any way shape or form.. thats german ARMY... not the SS...two completely different organizations within the hierarchy of the third reich... and even if it somehow shows the swastika in there.. i dont see the problem.. it used to be a boy scout merit badge.. and even Coca Cola had a promotion in the 20's or 30's with the swastika... My mother actually has an old pitcher with swastikas around the bottom and top of it... they were quite common back in the early 20th century...now i think they are very valuable.. probably because so many people threw theirs away...
 
Heh, reminds me when I could edit the minimaps of BF2. I'd throw very nice images in the corners. They nixed that eventually as well.
