You can get a new glass digitizer for an iPhone 4/4s for about $30 on Ebay, less if you watch the auctions instead of using Buy it Now. Might be worth considering.
 
Although I'm rather skilled at messing with electronics, she wants to move away from these 2-sided glass phones to prevent something like this from happening again.

do you still need headphones? I have a pair of Koss TBSE1 w/ m50 pads($80), Grado SR125i($100)'s that I can sell...
