I saw this post in the thread about racing for the GPU:

A dual core (2ghz) running 2 instances of FAH Client scores Approx 175ppd/core for 350ppd. Tha same dual core running SMP Linux will score approx 750ppd. I am have 9 computers running in my name. 4 are dual core running SMP and I am gettting 4000PPD (well I will be as soon as the one I built yesterday has a chance to get into the averages). The one I built yesterday is running 9 min 8 sec/ frame (15hrs /WU). Each WU is 587 points. 900+ppd. but it is an AM2 3800 O/C to 2.7ghz.

Anyway... it got me thinking.

What stuff have you been buying, and where? I've been trolling at NewEgg the last few days, trying to find the right balance of price, performance, and quality. I like to read the user's reviews of the products... and avoid the crap.

Anyway....... you have actually been spending money on your farm. So I'm curious what you bought. If you would not mind, what CPUs, Motherboards, and memory have you been using?

Thanks in advance! :)

My current build I had a 4 gig H/D and a CDRW.
I bought an MSI K9N Platinum SLI for $75 off of the for sale section on this site (new it is $122 from Newegg but a non SLI is $83)
I bought a Rosewell case w/300w supply for $25 from Newegg
I bought 1 gig DDR2-800 (Wintec 3AMD2800-1G1K-R R) for $100 from newegg (you could get just one 512 stick for $50 and take a small hit in times. I will test the exact amount later)
I bought a 40mm fan for $4 local and superglued (no way to screw it on)it to the Northbridge cause it got to hot at 250mhz FSB (its cool now) at 280mhz
I bought an AM2 X2 3800+ off E-bay for $114 (stock 4 heatpipe cooler w/fan speed mod. Temps 46deg C)
all prices included shipping
for a total of $318 (my most expensive folder yet but also my best producer)
I currently have this running at 2.8ghz. SMP Frame Time 8min 40 sec (for 587pt) Netting 975PPD. My goal is 1000+PPD and I am not done O/Cing it.
3.07PPD/$1

Smooth move [BRO] ! Good research, combined with smart buying = great folding boxen !

I'm currently accumulating parts (i.e. , wife won't know that I'm ending up with new 'puter :p )
for another C2D box. Starting point is a Gigabyte Mobo GA-965P-DS3 and a Corsair HX520W power supply. I will initiate box with a spare P4 3.2GHZ cpu and scavenged PC3200 memory until I buy the C2D cpu and decent PC6400 memory. (My first E6400 on this motherboard is oc'd on air cooling to 3.2GHZ & rock solid !) .

DS3 doesn't support PC3200 memory. Only DDR2.

Wow, I wondered who that was that steamrolled over me. :p Way to go BRO!
I'm slowly putting together a Core2Duo rig. Very slowly. :D

I'd like to hear about any other high PPD/$ (2PPD+/$1) machines out there so others can get an idea of what is the best/cheapest machine to build for the points recieved. I am just about done fine tuning mine for 1040PPD now (8min 8sec/frame for 587 pt WU's). thats 3.12PPD/$1

I'm haven't gotten into PPD/$ because it would just make me cry. That being said, I would almost be willing to wager that I have nearly the highest PPD average per box of those folding with more than one.
I did 25,757 points last week with the following 4 computers. This week won't be as grand due to some down time getting things in order.

X2 3800+ @ 2.1 on a ECS K8T890-A running Suse 10.1 and folding with the SMP Linux client.
X2 3800+ @ 2.65 on a DFI Lanparty Ultra-D with a Diamond X1950Pro. It is running WinXP and folding with one regular console and one GPU console.
Opty170 @ 2.85 on a ASUS A8N-SLI Premium running Suse 10.1 and folding with the SMP Linux client.
C2D E6600 @ 3.33 on a EVGA 680i SLI running WinXP and folding with two regular windows consoles.

All together that results in a Stanford "CPU" count of 6 from the 4 boxen.
6439.25 PPW (average) per computer.
3679 PPD for the week. 919 per computer on average.

Total stock GHz: 16.8
Total OCed GHz: 21.86
Total gained GHz: 5.06
That's my 30% overclocked mini farm.

Thats awsome. The C2D really ups your score. my 4 purpose built for folding are
X2 4400 O/C 2.65ghz $279 980PPD
AM2 4200 O/C 2.42ghz $252 925PPD (there are 2 of these)
AM2 3800 O/C 2.73ghz $338 1050PPD
all Linux SMP folders
I have a few single core folders at my families houses (I built the computers so they let me fold on them) for a total of 11 (1 is a GPU folder dual core gamer) scoring 4500PPD. Not as high as your PPD/machine (just 450PPD/machine) but I have super cheap builds

I need to get into this SMP thing, the two machines in my sig have a lot more potential behind them I think than what they're doing..

Is there any way to run the SMP client with mage's foldix deal? I've got ZERO experience with linux, and the opteron machine in my sig is DEFINITELY staying a windows box. The other one I could mess with, I guess... from reading another thread I found that the 9x5 series intel chips wouldn't work with the VMware SMP thing mage posted. Any other idea?

OMFG !! THAT is a killer [mob] of computers :D You do us proud (and I'm taking a few pointers for my future builds ! )
