I have a lot of spare parts, that I would like to roll into a new box.

My initial plan was to get a q6600 and move my e6600 to a new motherboard, but I dont know if this is going to happen.

So...on the budget side, what would you choose. I will have to buy mainboard regardless, so keep that in mind.

AMD x2 (939 or AM2) or Pentium D, say around 3.0Ghz. Which will pump out the better numbers. I will probably be running ubuntu.

What I was thinking, was try and get a board that would take c2d and the Pentium D, get the Pentium D now, and if I get the Q6600 down the road, Ill move them around...

Any suggestions?
 
I have an X2 4000+ @ 2.66GHz and a D at stock (2.8) right now, and the X2 definitely cranks out more. From a strictly budget perspective, the X2 is the better buy. Without spending cash on extra heatsinks, the X2 will overclock better, increasing its lead significantly.

However, your idea to get a quad-ready board is a sound one, so I'd go that route and take the temporary hit in production.

But then again, Barcelona is supposed to work in socket AM2 as well. :)
 
I would go with a board that takes the pentium D and that you can upgrade to a Q6600 later. A lot depends on if you have to purchase RAM and the CPU. If you do I would get a board that I could later run a Q6600 on with a gig of ram (more is ok but you can run smp WU's on as little as 512meg with no problem) and spend a bit more on an e4300 that you can clock up to 2.8 + ghz with the stock cooler.

At this point, I have the RAM, Case, Power, and Disk that I would need for a build.

I guess I should just get the q6600, when they drop again, and a cheap board that can OC, my e6600 is good for 3.6 (In the Cooler Months)
Ill move the q6600 to my current rig and make the e6600 a dedicated folder.

The Pentium D or X2 i think i was looking at ~150ish to build with a mATX board.
 
no - I've got to many quality cases and PSU's, I'll wait for an CPU/MB combo, hopefully for $300 or less. Unless I can get a dual server :)

 
Yeah same here, I am going to try to go the same route...

Besides I am not much for pre-built boxes, unless they are out of this world deals.
 
What do you all think of this combo for 137.98 after rebate?

I would still have to investigate compatibility with linux, but would this run SMP work units in a reasonable amount of time? I am not sure how well this board this board OCs, the reviews are hit or miss...but i will surely get an aftermarket cooler and give her a go.
 
Thanks for the advice, I will definately look into that mobo/cpu combo.

Would this e2160 at 1.8Ghz outpeform the AMD 2.4Ghz for SMP Large work units? Assuming no overclock on either?

Ill have to look at the pricing of the e4500.
 
The 4600X2 that i had in a dell averaged `35min/frame while the pd920 I had would do 29min/frame. The e4300 I have on a p5b-plus is doing a 2653 wu, and it its overclocked to 266fsb. 2.4ghz. It it going 19min/frame.

The e4000 series are the bargain smp folders. Cheap price, high ppd and run cool.
The e4300 has a 8-to-1 multiplier so at 200fsb it is 1.8ghz. @266fsb it is 2.4ghz.
The e4500 has a 11-to-1 multiplier so at 200fsb it is 2.2ghz. @266fsb its 2.9ghz.

Either of these should get you `1100ppd+.
