I realize there have been threads on this before, but.... pries and technolgys change very quickly, so I thought it would be nice to have a few of the hardware masters come in and price out three systems in terms of price.

ready

set

go.

Can you mount a micro atx board in an atx case?

In most instance, yes you can, normally alot of ATX cases will have the mounting holes for mATX and sometimes even eATX so in that instance you should be alright. If you're looking for information on pricing and such for various levels of a folding rig, I'd suggest taking a look at OSUguy's Folding Spreadsheet as it has pricing on all the components that you'd be looking for, straight from the 'Egg.

We need more clues concerning what you want to do with it etc.

Since you said "box" one would assume a case would be included. For instance at this writing I've two "boxes" I've just built:
AMD X2 3800+ good for 450 to 500ppd, core cost about $320
AMD Sempron 2400 good for about 110 to 120ppd core cost about $110.
Where core cost is cpu, m/b, 512mb RAM.
The X2 sits in a $60 Antec case, the Sempron sits in an old PIII case worth about $10 with PSU.
The X2 has a $50 vid card, the Sempron vid card maybe $5.
The X2 has about 400Gb of hd, the Sempron 8Gb.
The X2 has a 20" Dell $600 display, the Sempron a 14" Sony from about 1993 (originally attached to a PC Limited 286).

So what do you want? And what do you need?

And remember - a LEGAL license of XP costs over $100, and a legal license of Linux costs time to do anything fancy.

/edit and I just checked and I have another machine - bear with me -
started life as a ~$70 cpu & m/b Duron 1ghz about 4 years ago - got upgraded with a $31 1.8Ghz Applebred early this year, and is chewing out a p1136 at 142ppd, while getting about 4 hours of PowerPoint, Word, etc usage.

Thats where the beloved mage comes in though! ;) Toward the bottom of this post there are some free, dedicated folding clients built by unhappy_mage.

That's why I put in the word "fancy". A folder is easy, but it takes time to, say, download and install Kb3, tune a sound driver, etc.

Fry's black Friday sale!! :)
Right now Outpost is selling the cpu m/b for $330. So add in 512mb of RAM for $40 and your looking at $360.

If you are going to be a low price feeder like me you have to wait to strike. Just before that combo at Fry's got published I ALMOST bought it at Outpost for $330. Still worth the price. Most other places want over $400 for the combo.

The CHEAPEST folding box is always the one you BORG :D
Or a A64 3000 overclocked between 400 - 1100mhz is always a good buy.

Well, I have a case, psu, memory, a couple dvd and cdrw drives and a box of small hard drives.

I'm looking at these three items and it comes out to $144.00.

What are your guys thoughts?

One question, I have a 350watt psu that I originally used on a now dead athlonxp system, will that be enough for this system?

Well if your going super cheap box, I'm a big fan of this mobo and cpu combo, I've seen the consistenly ramp up from a 166 to a 266 FSB

That combo can't physically work. ;) Socket 754 motherboard and a socket A processor.
 And for that money, get this 754 motherboard. I've yet to get one, but from the company/specs, it should be loads better for identical money.

Match that with like a 3000+ Retail from ewiz.com for like $112

That's my suggestion. I might get that combo myself. ;)

Full Folding Ahead!
