Building an information kiosk

I just came up with a nifty idea and I'm not sure exactly how to do it. What I want to do is build an information kiosk.

What I was thinking is, having a small Via epia system connected to an lcd display. Having the display in the living room or kitchen and the epia system hidden.

What I would like to have is the ability to just use the display with a small keypad mounted next to it to retrive quick info such as weather or movie times, or constant display stock ticker or something.

Is there any software that will do this?

It'd probably be easiest to write the program yourself, if you're just wanting to do something like that. Like I know weather.com and such have code you can implement to get their weather.
