My Uncle has an old Dell that we are trying to get his webcam working with (VX-800 LifeCam). I am running out of ideas to try to get this thing working. When we go to My Computer and click on USB Video Device we get a "Creation of the video preview failed. Please check the device connection and make sure that the device is not being used by another application or user." All the drivers are up to date. By any random chance does anyone have any ideas on how to get this thing working? Here at the specs of the Dell:

Intel Celeron 2.4
256MB Ram
Windows XP Home SP3
Webcam is a LifeCam VX-800.

I know this is a shot in the dark but I am stumped.

Assuming you've already gone down the "update your OS and drivers" route, and that you've verified the functionality of the USB camera on another machine.... The 256 MB RAM on XP is a general red flag. Got any additional DDR-1 (or, shudder, RAMBUS) to toss into the machine?
