Charter Nears Deal To Buy Time Warner Cable For $55.1B

I would like to know how your hitting 120+GB on your phone?
More power to you and all... but I barely hit 2GB a month and I regularly surf and watch YouTube etc. etc.

You really need to get off your phone, lol. Do you not connect to wifi just so you can say I used 120+ gig. I had a girl I worked with that used verizon and unlimited data plan. She refused to use her home wifi and download torrents on her phone and used 170+ gigs a month. All because she said just because she could. I was cool with her so I was like more power to you, no wonder carriers don't want people on unlimited because some people think its cool to abuse. If you use your phone for tethering then I understand. LOL

Do you really not see the difference?

Considering that they're local monopolies and mega-ISPs in their own right, the final number of subscribers is more or less irrelevant.

The more of these mega-mergers we see, the less choice and control can ultimately be exerted by the consumer. Basically this inevitably leads to shittier customer service, higher bills and inevitably slows down the growth of broadband in this country, as it's more advantageous for these companies to try and leverage their subscriber base and middle-man actual services providers, than it is to grow their networks in a logical manner.

Want to take a wild guess about how much TWC/Comcast money went to grease palms?

Yes. "Not enough".

But the fact is, in lower echelons of government, special treatment is almost inevitably for sale. And customers/constituencies don't get a say so, other than to try and vote the guy (who just got himself a marble-lined platinum warchest) out of office.

Don't like it? Don't lie and advertise it as "unlimited".

lol Did he mention once he didn't like it? He just pointed out that your opinion of "acceptable" limit for a mobile device (200GB) was more consistent with home connection usage.

I am sorry to tell you that imo 200GB isn't a realistic or I should say expected limit/cap for mobile devices. I am guessing many would have the same opinion. If mobile companies literally had to build infrastructure for 200GB per line rates would be much more.

I am in full agreement with you, unlimited should be unlimited. Your service as defined should not be restricted or limited. But that doesn't mean your 200GB per month usage should be considered "barely acceptable" by customers or industry standards.

Geesh at least admit you have greater need or use for mobile data than most people. Funny how you got defensive about the comment and no one yet has answered another question of how someone can use 120GB+ per month on a mobile device.

Honestly it sounds like you full well know you are using your "unlimited" mobile data purely because you can in every-way you can rather than with normal usage. While as I said, unlimited is unlimited (and companies should at least have soft limits), your attitude is why "we can't have nice things" and everything will be metered eventually.

Don't like it? Don't lie and advertise it as "unlimited".

All of the unlimited mobile data contract indicate the unlimited data is to be used on the mobile device itself. Setting up tethering (often through a rooted phone) allows for other devices to use your data pipe in an unexpected way.

This is like saying you paid for cable so you should be allowed to run some coax over to a neighbors house so they can watch it too. I means it's YOUR cable service right, you can do whatever the hell you want with it.

Do you live in the vey limited areas where TWC was experimenting with Caps? Mostly in Texas iirc?

I had TWC in Austin last year and doubled my cap, didn't hear a peep from them.

i feel so sorry for our american brothers struggle with low speed/expensive internet, capped, uncapped, bla, bla, you really have some greedy companies over there robbing you that way... i use 1gb/s internet for almost 2 years and i pay 12EU for it.

Its the American way, and if you try to stop companies from getting their money you're labeled a socialist Obama lover and called un-American.

I've been a charter customer for about 17 years now, and never once have we had bandwidth caps. And monthly usage is about 800 GB on avg,

As long as they do not raise the rates any higher and do not impose caps (just checking usage shows that I average 600GB/month or so) I will simply have to accept the change. I guess the part that I have been and continue to be confused about is why TWC needs to be bought/merged with another company? Don't they have a solid business model that makes plenty of money? We're not talking about AMD here...

What do you want to do today, Comcast? Same thing we do every day, Pinky. Try and take over the world!

Big companies keep getting bigger, smaller companies can't compete with them. Capitalism, free market. Yay! Don't like it? Go somewhere else. Wait, there isn't anywhere else to go.

My wife used 22GB of data on Verizon (not unlimited anymore) on YouTube over a couple week period. She watches YouTube on her phone the same time she's watching Netflix on the laptop.... Weird gal.

She doesn't know how to use WiFi?

Even post merger, this can't be any worse than Comcrap.

I wonder if the gov.'t will try to block this merger. They've been less company friendly in the current administration.

These cable providers aren't actually competing with each other. What are you gonna do if you don't like Comcast? Move to a different city/state where Charter is available? Only thing that will happen is these companies will engage in even more aggressive price fixing. Comcast and Charter would have over 50 million customers between them, which will be more than half of all cable subscribers in the entire country.

I am wondering if Charter is gonna kill TWC Maxx? The upgrades TWC is making to internet and cable tv.

Well, in theory, there are non-cable ISPs available for many or most residents, namely DSL, fiber optic, and Google Fiber (latter is obviously quite limited).

I looked it up. Looks to be the same as what we are doing. We call it Spectrum though. Speedbumps, new tv equipment and guide, etc Charter doesnt offer 200 down though.

Most Markets are
Internet Plus 60 down and 4 up
Interent Ultra 100 down and 5 up

Select markets are
Internet Plus 100 down 5 up
Internet Ultra 150 down 6 up

What exactly is TWC MAXX?

My bad. That should be TWC Max. A response to Google Fiber. TWC is upgrading internet and cable services in some markets. Internet will get speeds of 200 to 300 megabytes per sec. down and about 20 megabytes per sec. upload. I don't know about the cable tv side since I am a cord cutter.

Well, after being good for quite awhile, Charter has been absolute shit the past few weeks in a lot of different areas. My internet service goes down daily and never a peep from Charter. The idiots on the phone don't even acknowledge it. Charter can't even seem to handle the customers they have, let alone what they would acquire from TWC. How about spending a few billion on fixing your fucking network?

Thank you, I'd appreciate that. Portage, WI. I also know several people that work/live in Madison, WI and this has been happening to them as well, along with phone and TV going down. My modem's log is loaded with errors, T4 timeout, T3, no ranging response, Unicast maintenance attempted, etc.

How many T4 timeouts within a 24 hr period?

3 T4 timeouts, also 7 T3 timeouts within the past day. My Motorola SB6121 has a pretty short log, but I check it every day, and with few exceptions that's what I have found consistently over the last few weeks.
