Ok my mom really needs a new computer, and so i deceded to build one for her. Basically i set the budget around $350 and i came fairly close to it, so whaddya think:

Case:
RAIDMAX ATX-208 Beige Steel ATX Mid Tower Link

PSU:
FSP Group (Fortron Source) ATX350GU ATX 350W Power Supply 115/230 V UL, CSA, CB Link

Mobo:
CHAINTECH VNF3-250 Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 Link

CPU:
AMD Sempron 2800+ Palermo 333MHz FSB 256KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Link

Video Card:
Leadtek WinFast A180 BT Geforce4 MX4000 64MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Link

RAM:
CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Link

HDD:
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L080P0 80GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA133 Link

DVD/CD Burner:
NEC Beige 16X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 4X DVD+R DL 16X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2M Cache IDE DVD Burner Link

i know this isn't anything special, was just looking for something stable, and cheap...

get an old shuttle, moms love those things, they think they are "cute".

also do you really think ur mom is gonna use a 80gb hd, and does she need a dvd burner?

what you mean like an SFF system? if it's cheaper then what i got above and has everything i need i might look into it...

or do you mean a shuttle motherboard?

Unless you have something against Western Digital, you can get a drive with exactly the same specs - IDE, 80GB, 8MB cache, for $4 less if you go with Western Digital. I've had great experience with them, and one that was broken thanks to Newegg was RMA'd very smoothly and easily.

And yeah, your mom probably doesn't need a DVD burner. Maybe get a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive or just a DVD-ROM drive for $10-20 cheaper.

Finally, Newegg has a $14 video card that you might want to look into.

yea i meant sff system....whats the max your willing to spend and ill compile a build for you on new egg, and ill also include shipping in final costs.

the HDD and the vid card stay, i'm more worried about the mobo, whether or not it works with semprons i'm not sure about...

besides i'm trying to build a better computer then what she's had (the majority of the parts in her comp are like 3 to 4 years old), i figured since CD/DVD burners are so cheap, might as well get her one so she can burn a whole crap load of stuff on one DVD instead several CD's.

oh and about the shuttle system, my mom could really care less what the comp looks like, as long as it works and its stable she's happy...

oh and i'm not planning on buying any this for at least a couple of weeks or so, so the list may change...

Don't worry about the Duron 1.8 GHz, it's really an Athlon 2200+ with less cache.

Duron 1.8 GHz $42 (processor)

Asrock motherboard for $39.50 (main circuit board)

Sparkle power supply $29.50

Total cost of this system? $383 US AND this includes a good gaming video card!!!

extra case fans? $2 each

You could choose a Cool Master 400 watt power supply instead for better upgrade ability. $35
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817171007
Then a 6600 GT video card for better gaming. $137 (with rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814135160
Or, an Athlon 2700+ for better gaming as well. $81
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103341

If you bought those three instead, the total would be $485 ($102.50 more).

Of course, the best deal for gaming right now would be a socket 939 Athlon 64 3200+ (requires another motherboard) & Geforce 6800.

BTW, you could always get a cheaper case (some are $10 less) and a cheaper video card to make that $350 target. That's amazing if you think about it though. $350 gee.

uh forumposter...this comp is for my mom, she's not exactly the gaming type :p

though thanks for pointing out the CD/DVD burner, i'll switch it out with that Lite-On that i picked...

Well, that means you can make the $350 then. That's kind of sweet. :D

I second the suggestion for a 1.8GHz Duron - I'm using it in a file server and it's stable as can be. Pretty fast too.
