Right now I'm running a core2 duo at 3GHZ. I'd like to upgrade to a 4-core i7, and I'd like to OC it to 4.8 GHZ.

In terms of motherboard, processor, and memory what is the least expensive way to get this result?

i5 2500K at microcenter.

Edit: You said i7 so that means i7 2600K or possibly a xeon (not sure of the overclockability of xeons).

Open box p67 from newegg, retail 2600k pricematch deal at nc ix site, the. 8gb ddr3 1600 for 40 bucks on a deal for the win, sir. Don't forget a heft like the cm 212+ to cool it!!

Is it worth it to buy the i7 over the i5? Is the i7 going to be that much faster?

Gaming I5 and I7/basic and extreme are 100% the same.

Overclocking the I5 and the I7 both can OC the same.

Price wise 25K beats the 26K any day.

All you need to hit 4.8ghz is a water loop, or a fake water cooler like H70/80/100/ or a really HUGE massive tower fan that takes up 14sq/m of your office space.

But cheap yes like 289 for both board and chip at Microcenter in store only sales.
