I've had a Pentium 4 530J since January 2005, and one time I applied too much thermal compound which caused the compound to get onto the bottom of the chip. Will the bottom of the chip be damaged if I cleaned the silver off of the chips underbelly? I recently looked at the bottom of the chip and there seems to be some type of protective coating on the bottom of the chip which I assume is used to protect the pads. Anyone know if a processor can be killed this way?

If it is conductive ArticSilver, then yes, it can ruin your chip. Just clean it off carefully.
