CoD4 and Steam

Quick question: If I were to buy a boxed copy of CoD4, could I register it on Steam so that I could download it to install if I later uninstalled it (like other Steam games)?

It's weird because when I tried to register my COD4 to steam, it did not recognize my cd key.

Buying and installing COD4 from Steam is different from buying and installing it from the actually video game store.

Ive got a more general question about Steam...but CoD4 could be used as an example. When you purchase and then download CoD4 off of Steam, does it make registry entries for it? I only ask because it only says "Delete local files" and not "Uninstall this game" or something to that effect. Just a curiosity question.
